Step by step improvement and growth
In 2002, the Provincial Elderly Sports Club was established to create a favorable environment for the elderly to exercise and improve their spiritual life. The head of the Provincial Elderly Sports Club, Pham Hong Nam, said that the club's function and mission is to gather elderly people with common interests and needs for physical education and sports activities in accordance with the regulations approved by the Provincial Elderly Association's Representative Board.
With the attention of provincial leaders, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism , the Provincial Elderly Association and a number of related units, especially the efforts and determination of the Board of Directors and members, the Club has overcome many difficulties, developed strongly, and affirmed its position in Quang Tri sports.
The club is a place to connect seniors who share a passion for sports. According to Vice Chairman of the Club Nguyen Thanh Tuan, over the past 22 years, the club has organized 5 congresses; annual summaries to review what has been achieved, what is still limited and to set out directions and tasks for the coming time. The club's management board is always united, upholds responsibility, regularly cares for and looks after training conditions, and knows how to listen and absorb members' opinions.
Members join the Club voluntarily and have a high sense of responsibility in building and developing the Club... Based on the principles of transparency, self-financing of operating costs and not for profit, the Club balances its own revenue and expenditure with a stable average monthly revenue of over 10 million VND.

In addition, the Club pays special attention to ensuring good facilities for members to practice. The Club inherited a gymnasium invested by the State for more than 20 years, then handed it over to the Provincial Elderly Association for management and handed it over to the Provincial Elderly Sports Club. During use, the gymnasium became degraded, the corrugated iron roof was leaking, and the floor carpet was peeling off.
Therefore, in early 2020, the club's management board consulted with the Provincial Elderly Association Representative Board to set up a project to repair and upgrade the stadium, and was granted a budget of nearly 650 million VND by the Provincial People's Committee to repair the corrugated iron roof, re-carpet the competition floor and some other items to have a relatively spacious and stable facility like today.
In addition to the support of the state budget, with the Club's revenue and the support of a number of units and individuals, in the past 5 years, the Club has mobilized over 400 million VND, gradually renovating facilities, equipment, lighting systems...
The gymnasium is currently equipped with 6 table tennis tables and 2 badminton courts, meeting the needs of 200 members to practice table tennis and badminton in the morning and afternoon. Thanks to its relatively good facilities and convenient working environment, the club has attracted a large number of members to participate in regular health training as well as serving well in organizing sports tournaments for the elderly.
Many exciting sports activities
Coming to the NCT Sports Club every morning and afternoon, everyone can feel the atmosphere and the exciting sports spirit of the members.
According to Mr. Pham Hong Nam, in order to meet the needs and interests of the members, the club is divided into 2 sections: table tennis (140 members) and badminton (60 members), each section is divided into 2 practice groups, morning from 4:45 to 7:30 and afternoon from 14:30 to 19:30. Each elderly person who comes here is excited to exercise, improve their health with the desire to have happy moments, refreshing smiles through beautiful balls or technical shots...

After practice hours, everyone rested together with life stories, enjoying the joy of old age. Mr. Nguyen Dinh Ha (64 years old), said: “In 2019, I started joining the Provincial Sports Club for the Elderly. Now, I consider the Club as a new “agency” since retiring in 2017. Because every afternoon, I regularly bring my racket to the Club to immerse myself in the vibrant atmosphere of health training, improving my spiritual life.
Here, the facilities are well-equipped for the elderly to practice sports safely and without injury. Club members see each other as family, support each other in terms of techniques to play table tennis and badminton well and create joy after each interesting exchange, thereby helping each person always feel full of energy, love life more.
Many members who have been with the Club since its establishment until now always consider it their second home. By participating in regular activities at the Club, most of the elderly have better health, and diseases related to bones and joints, heart disease, diabetes, etc. have gradually decreased.
Mrs. Ngo Thi Loi (62 years old) happily said: “We always care, encourage, motivate and support our children and grandchildren to participate in physical exercise and sports. Specifically, the Club creates favorable conditions for students to follow their parents and grandparents to the Club to play sports; at the same time, it guides and trains students in table tennis and badminton to participate in school sports competitions and Phu Dong Sports Festivals at all levels to achieve high results. This is also the way the Club spreads the spirit of sports to the younger generation”.
To evaluate and improve the quality of sports movements, the Provincial Sports Club for the Elderly regularly organizes internal table tennis and badminton tournaments; exchanges with many sports clubs inside and outside the province as well as participates in large-scale and quality sports tournaments.
Through that, the Club members have many useful playgrounds, exchange experiences and achieve many impressive results such as: participating in the 2022 Thanh Co Open Badminton Tournament, winning 2 gold medals (HCV), 1 silver medal (HCB), ranked 2nd/14 clubs; participating in the 2022 Dong Ha City Open Badminton Tournament, winning 3 gold medals, 3 silver medals, 1 bronze medal, ranked 2nd/19 clubs.
Mr. Pham Hong Nam added: “In the coming time, the Club will continue to maintain and improve the quality of training activities of members; organize internal tournaments periodically and increase exchanges and participate in tournaments organized by other clubs in and outside the province.
In addition to the two sports of table tennis and badminton, the club will gradually develop new sports: establish a dance - health care, volleyball; restore chess for the elderly, organize annual competitions to encourage the movement. All aim to develop diverse activities, better meet the needs of entertainment, training and sports competition for the elderly.
