The interesting thing about Aogashima is that there is a small volcano located in the crater, and it is still active to this day.
Located 35km south of Tokyo and surrounded by the Philippine Sea is Aogashima, a volcanic island in Japan’s Izu archipelago, home to 200 residents inside an active volcano. It is perhaps one of the most remote, hidden, and blessed islands in the Izu archipelago. Aogashima is nothing more than a volcanic crater, but it still has a strange charm.

Aogashima is believed to be the result of the overlapping remains of at least four underground volcanoes. More importantly, within the island is Maruyama, a smaller cone-shaped volcano that is considered to be still active.

Aogashima’s last major eruption was recorded between 1781 and 1785, killing 140 people. It took nearly 50 years for the island to fully recover, before some residents decided to return to live on this beautiful island.
Today, despite the threat of volcanic activity, the residents of Aogashima continue to live on the island permanently. They take advantage of the volcanic heat with natural hot springs and saunas, making it an island paradise.

The highest point on the island is Otonbu, which is the peak of the outer rim of the crater. At 432m above sea level, visitors can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the volcano lying in the Pacific Ocean .
Aogashima is a rarely visited island. Due to the rugged cliffs of layered volcanic sediments that surround the entire island, there is no real harbor to dock ships. Aogashima can only be reached by ferry when sea conditions permit, or by helicopter from nearby Hachijojima Island (Japan).

Therefore, the best thing that this island possesses is the peace, quiet and almost isolated from the mainland. The island does not have many recreational activities, except for enjoying the peace of a paradise in the middle of the ocean.
