Located on the 2nd floor of a collective housing complex hidden deep in alley 5 Dinh Le street (Hanoi), few people know that Mao bookstore was the first place to form Dinh Le book street as it is today.
The entrance to the alley is hidden on a busy street. When you get there, the sound of traffic seems to disappear, the space becomes quiet, just you and the book.
Mao Bookstore is the place with the most unique and eye-catching architecture in Hanoi. With an area of over 200 m2, the bookstore is divided into 5 rooms, books are classified into each area for readers to easily look up and search.
Mao Bookstore is a bookstore owned by Mr. and Mrs. Le Luy - Pham Thi Mao, opened nearly 30 years ago in a small attic on Dinh Le Street. The owners of the bookstore were the first people to sell books in Dinh Le.
At first, Mao bookstore was just a tiny book table that Mr. Luy and Mrs. Mao set up on the sidewalk next to the Post Office at the intersection of Dinh Tien Hoang and Dinh Le in the 90s. After 3 years of selling books on the sidewalk, they found a bookstore on the 2nd floor of the apartment complex No. 5 Dinh Le.
Starting from the heart of sincere book lovers, they personally translated and printed more than 500 books. Among them, the most famous is the book “Almanach - World Civilizations”, this is also the turning point that helped them accumulate more capital and expand the bookstore space.
On weekends, this place welcomes a lot of guests from the elderly, families to young people of generation Z.
As a regular visitor to Mao bookstore, Linh (22 years old, Hanoi) shared: "I really like going to Mao bookstore, this place not only attracts me with many good books but also is a place to dispel my worries."
The children were happy to find the book they liked.
In addition, foreign tourists are also excited to be introduced to book spaces like this.
The book is divided into different areas according to each topic and has specific instructions.
Mr. Vu (manager of Mao bookstore, has worked here for 8 years) shared that when he was a student, doing his graduation thesis, he came here to ask his grandparents to let him read books "for free" to find materials for his assignment and they immediately agreed. When he graduated, they invited him to work for them. With his love for books and respect for his grandparents, he accepted and has been working there ever since.
