The people of Son Dien commune preserve and promote traditional cultural values in conjunction with tourism development.
When visiting Son Dien, tourists cannot miss Ngam Village. This is a land rich in historical and cultural traditions, home to a large population of the Thai ethnic group. In Ngam Village, visitors can immerse themselves in the pristine, airy atmosphere, listen to the babbling of streams; travel down the Luong River by raft, admiring the beautiful natural scenery on both banks and experiencing fishing activities with the locals; and enjoy traditional Thai dishes such as grilled fish, bamboo rice, steamed pork, grilled chicken, rock snails, and purple sticky rice. Especially, visitors can stay in traditional stilt houses, and at night, enjoy a campfire, drink rice wine, and watch traditional Thai dances, folk songs, and dances performed by the locals.
Currently, Ngam village has 76 households with nearly 400 inhabitants, mainly of the Thai ethnic group. In recent years, thanks to the State's investment and the local government's efforts in promoting and encouraging community tourism, some households in Ngam village have boldly invested in renovating and building stilt houses and purchasing equipment to develop community tourism and increase their family income. Currently, about 20 households in Ngam village have built accommodation facilities to serve tourists. In the first five months of 2025, Ngam village welcomed approximately 5,000 visitors.
Ms. Lu Thi Nguyen, one of the households involved in tourism in Ngam village, said: "With the attention and encouragement of the local Party committee and government, my family has renovated and built a stilt house and improved the surrounding area to develop community tourism. At the same time, we actively participate in training courses on tourism skills and food safety and hygiene organized by the district and commune to improve the quality of service to meet the needs of tourists. Currently, our family can accommodate 30 guests and provide various tourist services. Thanks to the development of community tourism, my family has additional income and created jobs for several family members."
In 2019, Ngam village was recognized as a provincial-level tourist destination by the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee. This is an important condition for Ngam village to develop community-based tourism, create jobs, and increase the income of local people. Currently, the government is paying attention to building roads and a solar power system to better serve tourists visiting and experiencing the village.
Along with Ngam village, Son Dien commune is also focusing resources on building roads to serve tourism development in Nhai and Xuan Son villages. At the same time, they are promoting the preservation of traditional cultural identity among the people; establishing a performing arts group to serve tourists, introducing and promoting the cultural beauty of the ethnic minorities in the area; and encouraging people to actively participate in tourism training courses organized by the commune to gain more knowledge for community tourism. As a result, the number of tourists visiting and experiencing Son Dien is increasing.
However, tourism development in Son Dien commune still faces difficulties due to the lack of synchronized investment in transportation infrastructure; limited skills in community-based tourism among local people; inadequate waste and wastewater treatment; a lack of distinctive products for tourists to purchase as souvenirs for friends and relatives; and low occupancy rates at tourist destinations. In particular, local people lack capital to build infrastructure and develop quality services to meet the needs of tourists.
Mr. Pham Nhat Quang, Chairman of the People's Committee of Son Dien commune, said: Identifying tourism development as an important direction to create jobs and increase income for the people, the commune continues to strengthen propaganda and mobilization efforts to encourage people to develop community tourism associated with preserving and promoting cultural identity. We are enhancing the promotion of the local potential and strengths to attract individuals and businesses to invest in tourism projects in the area. We are focusing all resources on developing transportation infrastructure to create favorable conditions for tourists. We are paying attention to training and improving the knowledge and skills of the people in the tourism sector. We are directing villages to encourage people to plant and raise specialty crops and livestock to serve the culinary needs of tourists and increase people's income. Through this, we aim to attract a large number of tourists to Son Dien to visit and experience, contributing to promoting the beauty of the land and people of Quan Son.
