It has become a regular activity: every afternoon or evening, after a day of work, Ms. Nong Thi Thang, a Tay ethnic woman from Tuong 1 village, Hop Thanh commune, gathers at the Tuong 1 and Tuong 3 village cultural centers in Hop Thanh commune to practice traditional ethnic performing arts with other women in the village. Especially as the Lunar New Year of the Horse 2026 approaches, these practice sessions are held even more frequently in preparation for the spring festivals.

As the lively music fills the air, the Tay women, dressed in traditional costumes, become engrossed in folk songs and dances, creating a vibrant and joyful atmosphere like a festival. Through practice sessions, Ms. Thang and many other women have mastered each movement in performing the fan dance, scarf dance, and zither dance…
The "Tay Ethnic Cultural Identity Club of Hop Thanh Commune" was established over a year ago, building upon the foundation of the Tay ethnic performing arts group that had been active for many years prior. Currently, the club has about 20 members, including 10 core members who regularly practice and perform at activities in Hop Thanh Commune, formerly Ta Phoi Commune.
Driven by their love for culture and arts, and their passion for the Tay ethnic identity, the club members have worked together to revive several traditional Tay dances and folk songs, performing them in a theatrical format. From scarf dances and fan dances to technically demanding performances such as the Tinh lute dance, bell dance, and Khap Nom dance, all are preserved and passed on to the younger generation. Furthermore, the Tay ethnic cultural identity is strongly promoted and spread through performances at festivals and cultural activities in Hop Thanh commune and the former Lao Cai city, such as the Thuong Temple festival.

In particular, since its establishment, the club has brought together many women who are passionate about dancing and singing to practice together. The women are all very enthusiastic and eager to participate, at least once a week. As a result, the members have become proficient in performing many distinctive dances, such as: Then dance, fan dance, Dan Tinh dance, conical hat dance, basket dance, flower dance... As for songs, there are love songs, Then songs, spirit-calling songs, festival songs, and songs about going to the fields...

Speaking to reporters about preserving the cultural identity of the Tay ethnic group in general, and promoting the effectiveness of the "Tay Ethnic Cultural Identity Club of Hop Thanh Commune" in particular, Mr. Nguyen Trong Doan - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hop Thanh Commune, said: Hop Thanh Commune has many ethnic groups living together such as Tay, Giay, Mong, Dao, Xa Pho, Kinh… Among them, the Tay people live in some villages and hamlets in the lowlands of the commune, possessing a unique ethnic cultural identity. In recent times, the club has been established, becoming a beneficial playground for those who love culture and arts, contributing to the preservation and promotion of ethnic cultural identity and enriching the cultural life of the community.
Currently, Hop Thanh commune is implementing the Project on Preserving and Promoting the Cultural Identity of Ethnic Groups and Improving the Quality of Comprehensive Education for the period 2025-2030. In particular, the commune places great emphasis on preserving the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of ethnic communities, linking it with tourism development. The commune currently has 11 traditional performing arts groups, 1 ethnic sports club, and 1 health and wellness club, regularly participating in local festivals and events.
In the coming period, Hop Thanh commune will focus on building a modern cultural infrastructure to meet the cultural needs of the people; promoting and encouraging the people to improve the quality of activities of cultural and artistic clubs in general, and the "Tay Ethnic Cultural Identity Club of Hop Thanh Commune" in particular, serving local festivals and activities, and performing for tourists visiting and experiencing the area. Along with state budget support through local policies issued by the Provincial People's Council, the commune will continue to mobilize social resources and community contributions to ensure the effective maintenance of cultural and artistic activities. This will improve the quality of mass cultural, artistic, and sports activities, ensuring that the movement is maintained regularly, develops vibrantly, and becomes a "bridge" bringing traditional values into modern life.
