When Math is Fun!

Viewing problem-solving as engaging puzzles, Hoang Van Quyen, a student in class 11A5 at Dong Du Secondary and High School (Buon Ma Thuot City), has transformed mathematics into a joyful subject. This engaging approach is key to nurturing his passion for mathematics and has helped Quyen win numerous awards in competitions.

Quyen shared that, ever since she was little, she has loved numbers, riddles, and math problems given by her parents and teachers. In elementary school, Quyen was fascinated by solving difficult math problems and saw it as a journey to discover mysteries and excitement; she was also provided with a computer by the school to participate in Violympic (online math competitions) and won prizes at various levels.

In the 2021-2022 school year, while in 8th grade at Le Quy Don Secondary School (Krong Nang district), Quyen won first prize in the district-level excellent student competition. In 9th grade, Quyen transferred to Dong Du Secondary and High School and won first prize in the provincial-level excellent student selection competition for secondary schools in the 2022-2023 school year. In 10th grade, Quyen won third prize in the national-level excellent student selection competition for high schools in the 2023-2024 school year.

Speaking about her secrets to studying Math, Quyen shared that she always focuses on carefully reading the theoretical sections in textbooks because this is the solid foundation that helps her grasp knowledge deeply. After doing exercises, she will delve deeper into expanded knowledge to increase her thinking and creativity in problem-solving. In addition, she also regularly reads advanced books related to math topics in national-level exams. Participating in open courses sponsored by Dong Du Secondary and High School has helped Quyen access leading math lecturers in the country; thereby improving her thinking ability and her way of understanding lessons and problems…

In the 2024-2025 National High School Excellent Student Selection Exam, Quyen excelled and won second prize. To achieve this result, in addition to a scientific study method, Quyen also learned exam-taking skills, how to maintain composure at crucial moments; how to present his work clearly and neatly; and how to manage his time effectively.

According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Duy, a math teacher at Dong Du Secondary and High School, identifying and nurturing students early on is one of the key factors in developing the school's advanced education . Hoang Van Quyen himself has a talent for math, which has been demonstrated in primary and secondary school, so the school has guided and nurtured him since he completed the 9th grade.
