Talking to VietNamNet reporter, Mr. Nguyen Van Tinh (born in 1982, Phuc Luong's father) said that the family was very touched and proud of Phuc Luong's academic achievements when receiving the news that his son was accepted to many prestigious universities in the US.
Mr. Tinh said that he and his wife are both teachers (Physics and English). Phuc Luong is the eldest son and has a younger brother studying in grade 10 Physics at Ha Tinh Specialized High School.
"Since the age of 4, Phuc Luong was able to rhyme and read stories. Later in school, Phuc Luong excelled in Math and English, winning second prize in the National Excellent Student Math competition," said Mr. Tinh.
Sharing about his journey, Nguyen Phuc Luong said that he is passionate about Math and has been exploring knowledge and spending time on this subject since middle school. When applying for a scholarship, he struggled and devoted himself to the essay "The Orange Tree and the Passion for Learning Math".

“In my essay to American universities, I did not hesitate to share my difficult childhood story, lacking learning equipment. But it was from the difficult countryside that I learned resilience, and mathematics became my companion to help me conquer further dreams,” Phuc Luong said.
Speaking more about the main essay, the male student said: "The orange tree is associated with a childhood memory, and I use that image to tell about my journey of striving to succeed. The orange tree may shed its leaves in winter, but in spring it will sprout, grow and bear sweet fruit. My journey is the same. I have overcome all difficulties and challenges to conquer my dream . "
Phuc Luong shared that in his final year of high school, he had a hard time studying for the national math exam, practicing for the SAT and IELTS exams, and preparing his application to study in the US at the same time. However, thanks to the support of his teachers and family, Phuc Luong has gradually conquered the SAT score of 1500/1600, IELTS 7.5.
He is also one of three Ha Tinh students exempted from the high school graduation exam this year when he won second prize in the National Excellent Student Mathematics competition, ranked 25th nationwide and entered the team to compete in the International Math Olympiad.
“During the process of applying to American universities, there was a time when I wrote up to 30 essays in English in 2 weeks, interviewed with the admissions committee at 1am or sat through lunch in the national team room to complete my application. Having to wait for interviews from schools due to the time zone difference made my daily time even more limited. However, these experiences also helped me learn how to organize my work and time reasonably to be able to balance everything ,” Luong said.
Phuc Luong plans to study computer science and technology when he goes to the US because he believes that this field plays an important role in life. Pioneers in computer science and information technology create products and platforms to support people. The male student hopes to contribute a project or research to help improve life and contribute to society.
Commenting on his student Phuc Luong, Mr. Tran Dinh Huu, homeroom teacher of grade 12 Math 1, Ha Tinh Specialized High School said: "Phuc Luong is an excellent student. He is very intelligent and has special abilities in Math and English. Thanks to his constant efforts, he has achieved high academic results. Teachers and friends are always proud of Phuc Luong."
