In 938, under the righteous flag of National Hero Ngo Quyen, our army defeated the Southern Han army on the historic Bach Dang River. Then, in 939, Ngo Quyen proclaimed himself King and established an independent state.

The land of Co Loa (Dong Anh) was chosen as the capital of Vietnam. This was an event of great significance, officially ending 1,000 years of Chinese domination, opening an era of independence and autonomy for the nation.

King Ngo Quyen has been honored by history as the founder of the Vietnamese nation.

Recently, Hanoi city and Dong Anh district have invested in renovating and embellishing Co Loa Citadel. However, there is still no project here to honor the great contributions of Ngo Quyen.

The construction of the temple of King Ngo Quyen here along with other works honoring King An Duong Vuong is the people's wish; at the same time, it is also an address to promote education on history and cultural traditions.

After the Prime Minister agreed on the policy of choosing the location and site for the construction of the temple of King Ngo Quyen and the Hanoi People's Council approved the investment policy with the construction location at the land plot coded L-04 in the core zone of the Co Loa Special National Relic Site, Dong Anh district officially started the project of building the temple of King Ngo Quyen, with a total land area of about 6,180m2 .

Of which, the land area for construction of internal traffic roads around the project and the area for connecting technical infrastructure is about 980m2 ; the temple construction area is about 5,200m2 , including: the main temple, bell tower, drum tower, ceremonial gate, auxiliary items and technical infrastructure. The total investment is 298,402 billion VND, from the budget of Hanoi city, Dong Anh district and socialized sources.

The project aims to honor and pay tribute to King Ngo Quyen - the founder of the country, gradually completing the Master Plan to preserve, restore and promote the value of the Co Loa Citadel relic site; linking the development of heritage tourism with the cultural-spiritual space, creating a driving force to promote local socio-economic development.

During the construction preparation process, Dong Anh district conducted archaeological excavations, consulted with experts and scientists to scientifically select the construction site; ensuring no violation of the original relics (citadel and moat); and complied with the principle that the construction must not overlap the original relics in accordance with the provisions of the Law on Cultural Heritage.

The project was appraised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on April 4, 2025 and approved by the Hanoi People's Committee on April 19, 2025.

After receiving comments from professional agencies, the design documents and construction drawings were completed, the project ensured the implementation of the preparation, submission and appraisal work on schedule, complete legal documents, compliance with investment regulations, and sufficient conditions to proceed with the selection of project contractors.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Chairman of Dong Anh District People's Committee Nguyen Anh Dung requested the investor and related units to focus on human resources and equipment to speed up construction progress, ensuring technical, aesthetic, quality and safety goals.

It is expected that the construction of the temple of King Ngo Quyen will be completed in the second quarter of 2026.
