People in Na Meo village, Nam Cuong commune, cut down corn plants that had been flooded for a long time, preparing to grow alternative crops. |
In Nam Cuong commune, floodwaters inundated dozens of hectares of rice and crops. In the days following the flood, local authorities mobilized people to go to the fields to clear the flow, collect garbage, mud, and clean the canals.
Rice fields that can still recover are cared for, fertilized, and sprayed with pesticides; in areas that have been completely lost, people urgently prepare the land to replace them with short-term crops such as vegetables, soybeans, potatoes, etc. to keep up with the season.
Mr. Vi Trong Huyen, Head of Na Meo village, Nam Cuong commune, shared: After the flood, the flooded rice, corn and vegetable fields of the villagers were all instructed by agricultural extension officers on how to drain water, clean the fields, and improve the soil according to the correct procedures. At the same time, they cleaned the fields, removed crops that could no longer be recovered, and prepared the land for planting short-term crops instead.
In Hop Thanh village, Dong Phuc commune, people are actively re-cultivating beds to plant legumes. Some areas of corn and rice that can still be restored have been instructed on technical steps to restore the crops by commune experts.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Uy, Hop Thanh village, Dong Phuc commune, said: After receiving technical guidance from the commune's experts on post-flood crop care and soil treatment, we immediately started working. The buried corn, rice, and peanut growing areas are being restored to grow vegetables, beans, etc.

People in Hop Thanh, Dong Phuc commune, prepare the land on the flooded rice field to plant soybeans instead. |
Through observations at many rice fields and along rivers and streams, we found that there were still many flooded areas, and a large amount of mud and soil was still soft, so people could not fix it immediately. However, people were ready to mobilize human resources and machinery to clean the fields, prepare the land, and restore production in the coming days.
Ms. Trieu Thi Mao, an officer of the Economic Department of Dong Phuc Commune, informed: Up to this point, people in the commune's villages have been propagandized to focus on land preparation, striving to complete it in October. The locality has proactively provided fertilizers, agricultural materials, and seedling sources, etc. so that when the land preparation is completed, they can be distributed to people for planting. The specialized department has also advised the Commune People's Committee to mobilize and encourage cooperatives and agricultural cooperatives in the area to link up and coordinate with people to restore production.
In the long term, localities are also focusing on solutions to improve disaster resilience in agricultural production. Encouraging people to apply science and technology, change crop structures to suit terrain conditions and climate change; building models suitable to local climate and soil conditions to both produce effectively and protect the environment, adapting to extreme weather.
