In recent years, the appearance of Lam Giang village, Ham Tri commune (Ham Thuan Bac district) has undergone significant changes, with socio -economic development, preservation of ethnic cultural identity, and an improvement in the lives of the people.
Working together to build a new rural area.
Lam Giang is a village inhabited entirely by the Cham ethnic group, with 693 households, nearly 80% of whom are Cham. Over the years, the movement for national unity in building new rural areas has been enthusiastically supported by officials, Party members, and the Cham people. As a result, the appearance of this Cham village has improved significantly. The campaign to build culturally exemplary families has had a direct and positive impact on all aspects of socio-cultural life in the village. In 2023, 100% of households in the village registered for the title of Culturally Exemplary Family. After a three-step evaluation process, 681 out of 693 households achieved the title (accounting for 98.27%), with 14.98% of households achieving the title for three consecutive years (2021-2023). In particular, the cultural identity of the Cham people is always preserved and promoted, becoming a beautiful traditional cultural feature of the Cham community in folk religious festivals… creating a joyful, healthy atmosphere and fostering unity among ethnic groups in the residential area. Outdated customs, superstitions, child marriage, exorbitant dowry demands, and funeral practices have been eliminated. Family planning work has been implemented effectively, with 100% of children aged 6 to 36 months receiving vaccinations and vitamin A to prevent diseases, and 100% of children of school age attending school.
Along with that, the Cham people of Lam Giang village have united to develop the economy, eradicate poverty, and increase income through various means such as mutual assistance in capital, labor, and seedlings. In particular, poor households have received support for economic development and housing construction. Many effective economic development models have been replicated, such as beef cattle farming, free-range chicken farming, rice seed development, and fruit tree cultivation. As a result, the number of well-off households has increased to 430, average households to 204, and the number of poor households has decreased to 3.89% (currently only 27 out of 693 households are poor according to the new poverty standard). Notably, in the new rural development movement, the villagers have actively contributed land and funds alongside the government to pave many rural roads with concrete. In 2023 alone, Lam Giang village constructed 5 concrete roads totaling 748 meters in length with a total cost of 606 million VND, of which the people contributed over 212 million VND, and 50 million VND for the construction of a drainage system in residential area 7. In addition, in response to the National Tourism Year with the theme "Binh Thuan - Green Convergence," the villagers coordinated to clean up the area, clear bushes, unclog drainage ditches, and plant trees along the Lam Giang village roads. This has created a new look for the landscape, environment, and rural appearance of this Cham ethnic minority community.
Maintaining the status of a cultural village.
In addition, the village's mobilization committee, in coordination with various organizations, religious leaders, and other groups, continues to maintain the models of "Religious leaders participating in maintaining security and order," "Core group for propaganda and mobilization to reduce child marriage and consanguineous marriage," and "Women's group for propaganda and prevention of violence and abuse against women and children." During the year, the village's mobilization committee, in coordination with the commune's Fatherland Front, established a new model of effective mass mobilization: "Residential area protecting the environment" in Group 2 of Lam Giang village. Simultaneously, they continue to coordinate with various organizations to disseminate Party directives and resolutions, State laws, and the nationwide movement to protect national security and prevent crime. Through these efforts, the sense of responsibility and solidarity among the people has been increasingly enhanced, security and order have been maintained, social evils have been pushed back, and there are no longer any cases of complaints being escalated to higher levels. The spirit of solidarity and mutual support has been fostered through fundraising for the "For the Poor" fund and the "Gratitude and Repayment" fund, with the village achieving and exceeding the targets set by higher authorities. Thanks to these efforts, in 2023, Lam Giang village maintained its status as a cultural village for many consecutive years and requested the district to recognize it as a model cultural village in 2023. Mr. Thong Minh Dong – Head of Lam Giang village, said: “The above achievements are thanks to the leadership and guidance of the Party Committee, the People's Committee, the Fatherland Front Committee and various departments and organizations from the commune to the village, especially the strong response of all cadres, Party members and all people in the village, so the campaign "All people unite to build new rural areas and civilized urban areas" is becoming increasingly effective. Encouragingly, the economy is developing, the material and spiritual lives of the Cham ethnic people in particular and the people in the village in general are improving; security and social order are maintained, contributing to building a more solid cultural village.” It can be seen that the results of the new rural development program in Lam Giang village have become a bright spot among the Cham ethnic minority in Ham Thuan Bac district, contributing to many outstanding achievements for the locality in new rural development in recent years.
According to Mr. Dong, in 2024, Lam Giang village will continue to implement the "All People Unite to Build New Rural Areas and Civilized Urban Areas" campaign, linked with the construction of new rural communes and advanced new rural areas. The village will continue to launch the emulation movement "Joining Hands and Hearts to Build New Rural Areas," further fostering community awareness and promoting the people's role as the main actors in building new rural areas, especially in the "bright, green, beautiful, and safe" movement and rural transportation. The focus will be on effectively coordinating community movements to encourage people to practice good customs in weddings, funerals, and festivals, and to eliminate superstition, thereby contributing to building a healthy and civilized lifestyle in the community…
