Nguyen Thi Hau (born in 2005, from Thuong Xuan, Thanh Hoa ) was less fortunate than everyone else because her mother was mentally ill and had no awareness, got pregnant and gave birth to her. The female student grew up without knowing who her father was.
In addition to taking care of her and her child, her grandmother also has to take care of a son, Hau's uncle, who also has intellectual and physical disabilities.
With no one to rely on, Hau only knew how to rely on himself, be independent and go by himself. Hau considered himself a strong person. Understanding his situation, Hau never got discouraged, just kept going with determination to seek knowledge.
But when the day came to the university gate alone, the little girl felt so sad that she burst into tears. “That day, when I saw my friends and their families happily taking photos for admission, their parents finding them a room and preparing their application for admission... tears fell from my eyes,” Hau said.
Hau confided that the greatest luck in her life is probably that in every step, there are always teachers by her side to cheer her on and give her motivation to continue her journey to university.
With 3 relatives in poor health and needing care, Hau dreams of entering medical school, becoming a good doctor, to save many people.
“Witnessing my mother and uncle, I always wanted and aspired to become a good doctor to help people not suffer from illness,” Hau shared.
With great determination, Hau was an excellent student for all 12 years of schooling. In grade 11, she won the Encouragement Prize in the provincial excellent student competition in Biology. In grade 12, she won the Third Prize in Biology in this competition.
With high results in the 2023 high school graduation exam , Hau was admitted to the Nursing major of Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy.
The female student also prepared for her future by raising a small calf. Before entering university, Hau sold the calf, which had now become a buffalo, for 20 million VND.
“The day I received the acceptance letter was the day I sold the calf for 20 million VND. With 20 million VND, I went to Thai Binh to enroll in school and paid nearly 14 million VND in tuition. I kept the remaining 6 million VND to cover my living expenses until now. If I run out of this money in the second semester, I will borrow from the State's student loan fund,” Hau shared.
A representative of the Vietnam Young Talent Support Fund said that the fund decided to give Nguyen Thi Hau a scholarship for all 4 years of university after learning about her story, 2 million VND per month.
Nguyen Thi Hau is one of 120 students receiving the "Nang buoc valedictorian" scholarship - a program to honor and award scholarships to new students with difficult circumstances who are valedictorians and achieve high entrance rankings to universities and academies nationwide.
