Overview of the Forum "Identification and Traceability Technology - Enhancing Vietnamese Products"
On the morning of October 9, the Ministry of Industry and Trade coordinated with ministries, branches, associations and enterprises to organize the Forum "Identification and Traceability Technology - Enhancing Vietnamese Goods". This is an important event, aiming to affirm Vietnam's determination in building a transparent and modern ecosystem, creating a foundation for Vietnamese goods to improve their competitiveness and deeply integrate into the global market.
Mr. Nguyen Van Minh - Editor-in-Chief of Industry and Trade Newspaper delivered the opening speech of the forum.
Speaking at the Forum, Mr. Nguyen Van Minh, Editor-in-Chief of the Industry and Trade Newspaper, said that the Ministry of Industry and Trade announced that this year, the country's import-export turnover could reach approximately 900 billion USD, approaching the 1,000 billion USD mark that General Secretary To Lam set and expected in a speech in early 2025. However, to achieve this figure, great efforts are needed from relevant ministries, branches and businesses, including efforts in verifying origin, combating trade fraud and goods of unknown origin.
In the context of strong globalization, Vietnamese goods not only compete in quality and price, but also have to prove their origin clearly, transparently and reliably. Traceability has become the "identity card" of the product, the "steel shield" to protect consumers and the "passport" for Vietnamese goods to reach out to the world .
"There can be no healthy market if there are still goods of unclear origin. There can be no national brand if businesses are not fully aware of product information transparency. In particular, there can be no consumer trust if the media is not strong enough to spread the values of honesty and standards," journalist Nguyen Van Minh emphasized.
In the context of deep integration, when Vietnam participates in many free trade agreements (FTAs), transparency in the origin of goods has become a vital requirement.
Sharing at the Forum, Mr. Tran Huu Linh - Director of the Department of Domestic Market Management and Development (Ministry of Industry and Trade) emphasized that traceability is not only the task of the management agency, but also the responsibility of businesses and consumers. Because only when the product has a clear "identification card" of origin, production process, quality and circulation journey, can the market operate transparently and sustainably.

Mr. Tran Huu Linh - Director of the Department of Domestic Market Management and Development (Ministry of Industry and Trade)
Over the years, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has closely coordinated with ministries, branches and localities to deploy many solutions to improve the effectiveness of market management, combat smuggling, trade fraud, counterfeit goods and goods of unknown origin. Market management forces nationwide have increased inspection, supervision, detection and handling of tens of thousands of violations each year, making an important contribution to cleaning up the business environment.
In the first 6 months of 2025 alone, authorities nationwide have inspected and handled more than 50,000 cases, including nearly 2,000 cases of trading and transporting prohibited goods, nearly 7,000 cases of trade fraud and tax fraud, and more than 1,600 cases of goods of unknown origin. Many cases have been prosecuted, creating a strong impact in deterring and preventing violations.
However, Mr. Linh also said that although the fight against counterfeit goods, fake goods, and origin fraud has been strengthened, the situation is still complicated with many sophisticated methods and tricks. Goods of unknown origin still infiltrate many distribution channels, even e-commerce.
Therefore, the implementation of a synchronous, unified and modern product traceability system is an urgent requirement to not only support state management, but also create a legal corridor for enterprises to produce and trade transparently and sustainably.
Director Tran Huu Linh said that the Ministry of Industry and Trade is focusing on perfecting the legal framework for the identification and traceability of goods, including the development of a Decree on criteria for origin of domestically circulated goods. Once issued, the Decree will be an important basis for authorities to distinguish genuine goods from fake goods, Vietnamese goods from imported goods, and at the same time, support the fight against trade fraud and protect consumers.
At the same time, the Department of Domestic Market Management and Development is coordinating with relevant units to deploy advanced technology solutions such as blockchain, IoT, QR codes, GS1 barcodes... to ensure accurate and complete traceability.
"We aim to build a centralized database that allows management agencies, businesses and consumers to access, look up and monitor product information. When data is transparent, market confidence will be strengthened and consumers will be 'smart supervisors' of the market itself," Mr. Linh shared.
The Director of the Department of Domestic Market Management and Development affirmed that traceability is not only a technical tool for market management, but also the key to open the door to sustainable development for domestic trade. When goods are clearly identified and traceable transparently, genuine businesses will be protected, consumers' rights will be guaranteed, and trust in Vietnamese goods will be firmly consolidated.
The fight against poor quality goods and goods with fraudulent origins is a long journey, requiring close cooperation between the State - enterprises - technology - consumers. Only with strict laws, modern technology and smart consumers can we build a transparent, fair and sustainable market. Each Vietnamese product needs a "transparent passport" to confidently conquer both domestic and international markets.
