Foreign investors make high profits in the Korean market
According to information released by the Korea Exchange yesterday, foreign investors in the Korean stock market this year recorded an average profit four times higher than individual investors. In which, the group of stocks with the most net purchases by foreign investors achieved an average yield of up to 145.6% - three times higher than the increase of the KOSPI index in the same period.
The stock with the highest net foreign buying since the beginning of the year through September 2 was Samsung Electronics, with a value of 5,659 trillion won, followed by SK Hynix with 3,539 trillion won. Samsung Electronics shares rose 67.3% from 53,200 won at the end of last year to around 89,000 won this month, while SK Hynix increased by 127% in the same period.
Some other stocks also increased sharply in the foreign net buying portfolio such as Hanwha Aerospace (up 241%), Hyosung Heavy Industries (259%), Hyundai Rotem (355%), Esu Petasis (189%), Korea Electric Power Corporation (77%), Kakao (56%), Samsung Electro-Mechanics (58%) and Hyundai Mobis (26%).
In contrast, individual investors focused on buying secondary technology and battery stocks such as NAVER and Samsung SDI, but the results were less positive. The 10 stocks with the most net purchases by individuals only achieved an average profit of 37%, one-quarter of the level of foreign investors.
Specifically, NAVER was the stock with the most net purchases by individuals with 2,069,000 billion won, but only increased by 27.2% this year. Samsung SDI decreased by 14.8%, Hyundai Motor increased by only 3.8%, SK Telecom decreased by 1.5%. Other codes such as LG Electronics (-8.5%), CJ CheilJedang (-8.6%), Alteogen (52.3%) and Hanmi Semiconductor (21.9%) also recorded uneven increases and decreases.
Analysts say this trend shows that foreign investors are showing their ability to select stocks with large capitalization and high recovery potential, especially in the semiconductor and defense industries. Meanwhile, individual investors still tend to have a short-term speculative mentality and have not kept up with the recovery of the market-leading stock groups.
