Last November, Grand Central Terminal, a historical and cultural icon over a hundred years old, brought a pleasant surprise to residents and tourists with a promotional campaign using... scent.
Instead of the typical smell associated with the New York subway system, the entire Grand Central Terminal area is now covered in the sweet scent of vanilla and fresh pine. The familiar space immediately becomes warm, clearly reminding of the end-of-year holiday spirit - the time when New York attracts a huge number of tourists from all over the world to experience Christmas and welcome the New Year.
The campaign, launched by Bath & Body Works, is the first to use scented advertising directly in the city’s subway system. While it has a commercial purpose, it also enriches the unique cultural and tourist experience of New York, where visitors can not only see and hear the rhythm of urban life, but also “smell” the holiday season in the true sense.

For many international passengers, Grand Central is already a famous stop thanks to its magnificent classical architecture, emerald green domes and the iconic starry sky on the lobby ceiling. Now, with the scent of the festival spreading, this space becomes even more attractive, making the journey to explore the city more complete. Many travelers shared on social networks that the feeling of stepping off the station and being immersed in the pine-vanilla scent was like stepping into a Nordic Christmas market right in the heart of Manhattan.
The scent campaign is a vivid example of how New York continues to innovate to maintain its position as one of the most innovative destinations in the world. The use of multi-sensory advertising not only helps brands make their mark, but also helps the city enhance the visitor experience in public spaces – a trend that is expected to become more popular in the coming years.
During the holiday season, when tourists flock to New York to admire the Rockefeller Christmas tree, ice skate in Bryant Park or visit the splendidly decorated shops along Fifth Avenue, Grand Central with its new "Christmas scent" promises to become an interesting stop, contributing to bringing the city's cultural and tourist experiences to new heights.
