Once familiar with the image of the "salt mine" of Vietnamese cinema, Kieu Minh Tuan will bring a completely new color when he takes on the role of dubbing the character Grigon - the powerful "patriarchal" lord in Pixar's latest animated film (Elio) Elio, the boy from Earth, to be released in theaters from June 27.
This role marks the first time the 1988-born actor has collaborated with the world's leading animation studio, and continues to expand his professional voice-over journey after a series of famous works that have caused great resonance.
In Elio, Lord Grigon plays the main villain role of the film. The character is the supreme leader of the planet Hylurg, and is also the father of Glordon - the friend that the young Elio Solis has just befriended after wandering into the Galactic Alliance. Grigon has the appearance of a giant worm, 4 blue eyes and a body covered in iron armor. He has the ambition to build a good army to dominate the planets in the universe. Elio now has to join hands with new friends, including Glordon, to fight against this conspiracy.
Grigon is a conservative father who always wants to control and shape his son into his own rigid mold. But behind his fierce appearance, he still cares for and loves Glordon. The contrast between his absolute authority and the silent loneliness of a father who is powerless to "befriend" his son makes Grigon a conflict that is both scary and pitiful.
Portraying a character with a complex personality and inner life like Grigon poses a big challenge for any voice actor. And instead of choosing the safe zone with familiar comedic roles, Kieu Minh Tuan proactively stepped out of his field of expertise to prove his mettle and flexibility in his acting career.
Before appearing in Elio, the actor had proven his ability and been loved by a wide audience through animated voice roles such as Despicable Me 3, Lego Ninjago Movie and most recently Transformers One.
Elio is one of the most expensive animated films in history, costing up to 300 million USD (about 7,500 billion) not including marketing costs - on par with the biggest live-action blockbusters in Hollywood.
