On the evening of June 17, in the capital Wellington, New Zealand, in a solemn and warm atmosphere of friendship, the Vietnamese Embassy in New Zealand held a ceremony to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-New Zealand diplomatic relations (June 19, 1975 - June 19, 2025).

Attending the ceremony were New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters, Deputy Foreign Minister Grahame Morton; Professor Roberto Rabel, President of the New Zealand-Vietnam Friendship Association; Vietnamese-origin female parliamentarian Pham Thi Ngoc Lan, along with many representatives of leaders of ministries, branches, agencies, government and local organizations, businesses, New Zealand friends, Ambassadors and staff of the New Zealand Embassy in Vietnam through the years, the diplomatic corps in Wellington, associations, delegations, and representatives of the Vietnamese community in New Zealand.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to New Zealand Phan Minh Giang reviewed the 50-year development of the Vietnam-New Zealand relationship, and affirmed that the bilateral relationship is growing stronger than ever with the two countries agreeing to upgrade their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in February 2025.

Expressing gratitude for the support and contributions of generations of Vietnamese and New Zealanders to the development of bilateral relations over the past time, Ambassador Phan Minh Giang expressed his belief that, based on the foundation of the relationship that the two countries have worked hard to cultivate over the past half century, together with the strong determination of both countries, the Vietnam-New Zealand Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will continue to develop more strongly, comprehensively and extensively, bringing more practical benefits to the people of the two countries.

On this occasion, Ambassador Phan Minh Giang thanked and hoped that the New Zealand Government would continue to support and create favorable conditions for the Vietnamese community living, working and studying in New Zealand, serving as a bridge of friendship and cooperation connecting the people and the two countries.

At the ceremony, the representative of the New Zealand Government, Deputy Foreign Minister Grahame Morton emphasized that New Zealand was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with the unified Vietnam, and since then the relationship between the two countries has been increasingly strengthened and expanded in various areas of cooperation, in which Vietnam is currently New Zealand's 14th largest trading partner, and at the same time, he looked forward to VietJet Air opening a route between the two countries later this year.

Appreciating Vietnam's important role as a rising star in the region, Deputy Minister Grahame Morton welcomed the official upgrade of New Zealand and Vietnam's relationship to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership on the occasion of the New Zealand Prime Minister's official visit to Vietnam in late February 2025.

The representative of the New Zealand Government emphasized that the anniversary event not only reviews the achievements of cooperation, but also marks the beginning of an optimistic future, adding new momentum to the relationship between the two countries, and affirms continued coordination to build a sustainable bilateral relationship, achieving more achievements in the next 50 years.

During the celebration, guests enjoyed a piano recital with Vietnamese and New Zealand musical works by pianist Luu Hong Quang, currently studying for a PhD in Musical Arts with a full scholarship at the New Zealand School of Music (Wellington), and enjoyed traditional Vietnamese dishes.
