Pham village, Duong Thanh commune, Phu Binh district, Thai Nguyen is famous in the white horse playing world not only because of its experienced and skilled players but also because this profession has helped many households in the village become billionaires.
Village of villas
For the people of Pham village, white horses are not simply a commodity to buy and sell, but they are also closely associated with the culture and memories of this midland region from decades ago, when the country was still facing difficulties.
The villas are built spaciously in Pham village.
From horses carrying goods, pulling carts, plowing fields... now, Pham village has become the largest white horse breeding capital in the North.
Coming to Pham village now, everywhere one can see white horses, large and small farms and busy lines of vehicles of traders and sellers. Interspersed with them are spacious villas springing up like mushrooms. That is the result of the white horse breeding model that has brought to the people.
Speaking to reporters in her family's spacious house, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh (60 years old in Pham village) said that since ancient times, the people of Pham village have known how to trade and sell horses. For more than 10 years now, the use of horses for agricultural production is no longer used, so people have switched to raising horses to sell for meat and bones to make glue.
"Now, people in Pham village often use horse meat in feasts and weddings. In addition, restaurants inside and outside Thai Nguyen province also have a great demand for horse meat," said Ms. Thanh.
Ms. Thanh added that during the recent Tet holiday, a business household in Pham village slaughtered nearly 100 horses to serve the people. The main products were fresh horse meat, horse ham, horse glue...
"Up to now, this household still slaughters 1 to 2 pigs every day to serve the people and supply the restaurant. Villas are now springing up like mushrooms in Pham village, on average 80 out of 100 houses are villas," said Ms. Thanh.
Making billions is not difficult
While entering Pham 2 hamlet, the reporter met Mr. Tran Van Thu (62 years old, from Pham village) on his way to a household to buy a horse to raise. Mr. Thu shared that he has been exposed to horses since he was a child. In addition to raising horses for meat, he also tames horses for riding.
"My health is poor so I only raise 1 or 2 horses for profit. Before Tet, my family sold a white horse. Now we are looking for this breed to raise and sell to other households for meat to make glue," said Mr. Thu.
Mr. Thu shared more about the revenue from horses: "Raising horses also brings in quite a high economic value . For example, if I raise one horse, after deducting expenses, I earn nearly 2 million VND per month. If a family raises many horses, earning several billion VND per year is normal."
When asked about large-scale livestock farming households in the locality, Mr. Thu said that a typical example is Mr. Duong Xuan Truong's family.
Caring for horses is like caring for children.
From Mr. Thu's introduction, the reporter met Mr. Duong Xuan Truong, Deputy Director of Pham Village White Horse Breeding Cooperative.
To have a healthy white horse, the people of Pham village have to take care of every little detail.
Mr. Truong said that there was a time when his family raised up to 60 white horses, but now they maintain 30-40. Having been involved in horse breeding for many years, Mr. Truong has a good understanding of the experience to recognize and choose the most standard and healthy white horses.
According to him, when choosing a breeding horse, you should choose a horse that is 4 months old or older, weighing about 120kg. This will ensure the best growth and development of the horse. Raising white horses is relatively easy. However, horses are susceptible to coughing when moving regions or changing their living environment suddenly. Therefore, it is necessary to vaccinate against infections so that the horse will not get sick.
The main food source of white horses is grass. On average, an adult white horse will eat about 30kg of fresh grass per day. In addition, he also adds some starchy foods such as corn bran and rice to ensure enough nutrition for the horse to grow.
He sells white horses for 270,000 - 300,000 VND/kg of live weight, and horse meat for 300,000 VND/kg. The cooperative currently sells white horse glue for 1.2 million VND/tael, and white horse lungs soaked in honey for 1 million VND/liter...
Mr. Truong added that in addition to the meat sold on the market, each horse weighing about 200kg can be processed into about 4-5kg of glue, equivalent to 40-50 million VND. The value of a white horse with red eyes is higher.
According to Mr. Truong, compared to other livestock such as buffalo and cows, raising white horses brings many times higher economic efficiency.
Chairman of Duong Thanh Commune People's Committee, Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, said that Pham village currently has about 400 households living there. Among them, households that raise and process products from white horses have very high incomes, with some households earning billions of VND/year such as the families of Mr. Duong Xuan Truong, Dao Van Cuong, Duong Van Trung...
It is known that in order to preserve the white horse gene source and develop this special animal species, in recent years, Pham village has received technical transfer of breeding and conservation of white horse genes from Thai Nguyen province, Phu Binh district, Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, Ba Van Horse Farm - a facility for preserving rare horse genes (under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development); investment and support in building barns, roads, irrigation canals for growing grass for raising horses.
