According to the announcement of the 42-year-old leader, his New Ideas Party (Nuevas Ideas) won 58 out of 60 seats in the unicameral parliament , becoming the party with the highest percentage of seats in parliament in the history of El Salvador.
In the election, Mr. Nayib Bukele competed with five other candidates for the presidency, including Mr. Manuel Flores of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN), Mr. Joel Sánchez of the Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA), Mr. Luis Parada of the People's Era Party, Mr. José Renderos of the Solidarity Forces Party and Ms. Marina Murillo of the Salvadoran Patriotic Brotherhood Party.
Regional and international media assessed that President Nayib Bukele's victory in this election was predictable, after his outstanding achievements in the past term, especially in his efforts to revive the economy as well as suppress crime in a country notorious for gang problems.
Accordingly, after nearly 2 years of applying a national emergency to suppress crime, El Salvador authorities have arrested a total of 76,000 gang members. For the first time in history, this Central American country has not had a single murder in the past year.
In the February 4 election, El Salvador voters cast ballots for president, vice president and members of parliament.
In June 2023, El Salvador enacted an electoral reform law that reduced the size of the unicameral National Assembly from 84 members to 60, and reduced the number of municipalities in the country from 262 to 44.
