GD&TĐ - Nguyen Bui Duc Dung is the only candidate of the Vietnamese team to win the Gold Medal at the 2025 Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad.

Possessing dozens of Gold Medals in international Math and Informatics competitions, Nguyen Bui Duc Dung continues to reap success as the only contestant of the Vietnamese team to win the Gold Medal at the 2025 Asia- Pacific Informatics Olympiad.

Excellent performance

Participating in the 2025 Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad, all 6 Vietnamese students won prizes with 1 Gold Medal, 2 Silver Medals and 3 Bronze Medals.

The winner of the Gold Medal is Nguyen Bui Duc Dung - an 11th grade student at the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences (University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi). Notably, Dung scored 236/300 points, including two exams with the maximum score of 100.

Mr. Do Phan Thuan - Deputy Head of the Vietnamese delegation participating in the 2025 Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad assessed that this is a proud achievement because the APIO exam is always at a high level of difficulty. Although only in grade 11, Duc Dung has excellently won the Gold Medal with the highest score in the team and will certainly achieve higher results in the future.

Nguyen Bui Duc Dung is a familiar face in Math and Informatics competitions, and has won many domestic and international awards. Notably, Dung has won Gold Medals with high scores in the following competitions: Singapore Mathematics, Kangaroo Mathematics, Bebras International Mathematics, US Open Mathematics Olympiad, Titan Mathematics Olympiad...

According to the teachers, Duc Dung is a special phenomenon with outstanding thinking ability. Not only is he excellent in Math, he is also known as the "golden boy of IT". Talented beyond age, Duc Dung is always chosen to participate in competitions for excellent students at higher levels and wins high prizes.

In the 2021-2022 school year, as an 8th grader at Newton Secondary and High School, Duc Dung was selected to join the Informatics team to compete in the city-level excellent student competition with his 9th grade classmates and won first prize, and was also the city's valedictorian in the Informatics subject. Also in that school year, Dung competed in the Young Informatics Competition and won first prize at the city level; third prize at the national level.

In grade 9, Duc Dung continued to register for other prestigious competitions such as: Gold Medal in the WMTC Team Math Championship, Gold Medal in the AMO International Math Competition; Gold Medal in the Central Highlands - Central Region Informatics Competition; Gold Medal in the Hue ICT Challenge Informatics Programming Competition. With his excellent academic achievements, Dung chose to study in the IT specialized class at the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences to continue to have the conditions to do in-depth research.

All-rounder

Talking about her son, Ms. Bui Thuy Ngan said that since he was a child, Dung showed his natural talent and love for the alphabet and numbers. At 20 months old, Dung could read and write the Vietnamese alphabet, and at 22 months old, he could read and write the English alphabet. In particular, at 2 years old, Dung could perform basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

“When he was 3 years old, he asked to go to school and went to an English center to study with his mother. At first, no center would accept Dung because he was too young. However, after a trial lesson, the teachers made an exception and let him continue studying with his older siblings. Therefore, at only 3 years old, he was already learning English and basic math for elementary school,” Ms. Ngan recalled.

Accompanying Dung for 4 years of middle school, Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Linh - teacher at Newton Middle School - High School is not only proud of his outstanding academic achievements, but also happier when he always balances his studies with cultural and movement activities.

“No matter what stage or playground, whether it is a band singing or a football tournament; a debate or a dramatization of a work…, Dung is always enthusiastic and actively participates, achieving many high awards. Perhaps that is one of the ways Dung and his friends always find positive inspiration in their learning journey,” said Ms. Linh.

Dung is an excellent student not only in Informatics, but also in many other subjects such as Mathematics, English... Dung is respected by his friends and highly appreciated by his teachers. Giving his assessment, Mr. Le Cong Loi - Principal of the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences also informed that Nguyen Bui Duc Dung has participated in many intellectual playgrounds from domestic to international.

Prestigious competitions on a global scale have become familiar as a journey of borderless experiences for an excellent male student with a passion for science. He loves challenges, always knows how to renew himself, and breaks through his own milestones to constantly develop.

Sharing the secret to studying and winning high prizes, Duc Dung said that first of all, he always finds passion for the subject. For example, with the interesting subject of Mathematics, which has many applications in life, it can help Duc Dung's parents do business, sell goods and create electronic devices to serve people. Information Technology - also a subject closely related to Mathematics, helps to think more clearly...

With the achievement of 6 students winning prizes at the 2025 Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad, the Vietnamese team ranked 5th after China, Russia, Japan, and South Korea, continuing to affirm its leading position among countries in the Southeast Asian region.
