TTH.VN - Early in the morning of July 11 (May 24 of the lunar calendar), the Hue Monuments Conservation Center held the 2023 Am Hon Ceremony to commemorate the compatriots and soldiers who lost their lives in the Fall of the Capital in 1885.

The Altar of the Dead ceremony was restored according to the court rituals recorded in the Royal Records under King Thanh Thai.

The Am Hon Festival is a beautiful traditional Vietnamese festival that has taken place throughout history, especially under the Nguyen Dynasty in Hue, promoting humanistic values, mainly as a form of connection between humans and the natural world ; to commemorate those who fell in the Fall of the Capital in 1885.

The organization of the Am Hon Festival not only shows respect for national rituals and ethics and is in line with the people's wishes, but is also an occasion to remind of a historical lesson of the country with the meaning of promoting noble deeds in awareness and action for generations, especially the young generation today and tomorrow. That precious tradition is the source and strength of solidarity that creates the cultural identity of the Vietnamese people in general and the people of Thua Thien Hue in particular.

The Altar of the Souls on Ong Ich Khiem Street (Thuan Hoa Ward, Hue City) was established by the Nguyen Dynasty in 1894, under the reign of King Thanh Thai. This is a place to worship and pay homage to the souls of officials, soldiers, and people who died in the fall of Hue on July 5, 1885 (ie May 23, At Dau year).

Every year on the 23rd day of the 5th lunar month, people in Hue hold a ceremony to worship the dead at the Am Hon altar and the Am Hon temples located in the Hue Citadel. This is a ritual to pray for the souls to be liberated. This ritual is a spiritual activity, and at the same time, a beautiful and humane cultural feature of the people of Hue.

The Soul Altar Ceremony includes the following rituals: Quan Tay Ceremony; Thuong Huong Ceremony; So Hien Tuu Ceremony (first wine offering); Doc Chuc Ceremony; Hanh A Hien Ceremony (second wine offering); Chung Hien Ceremony (third wine offering); Tea Offering Ceremony; Hoa Van Te Ceremony.
