Marti Cifuentes is tasked with helping Leicester return to the Premier League. |
The Foxes have confirmed the signing of the 43-year-old on a three-year deal, with the aim of returning the club to the Premier League. Cifuentes has joined from Queens Park Rangers (QPR) after Leicester agreed to pay a £500,000 compensation fee.
Cifuentes' arrival ends a 34-day absence at Leicester, since the end of the season and the departure of Ruud van Nistelrooy following a poor run of form. The Dutchman managed just four wins in 25 games, failing to keep the club in the Premier League.
The new Leicester manager expressed his great honour at his appointment. He said: "This is a fantastic club with a proud history and it is a privilege to be asked to help write the next chapter." Cifuentes is also looking forward to getting to know the players and connecting with the fans and the city in the coming months.
Cifuentes will be joined by assistant coach Xavi Calm at Leicester, who worked alongside him at QPR. Before coming to England, the Spaniard coached Hammarby IF and helped the team win the Swedish Cup.
He also helped QPR stay in the English First Division in 2023. During his time leading QPR, Cifuentes led 83 matches, won 29, drew 23 and lost 31 matches.
Cifuentes' first test in his new role will be the competitive match against Sheffield Wednesday on August 10.
