"John Wick", the film series starring Keanu Reeves, reached a global revenue of one billion USD on May 19.
According to Variety, Lionsgate announced that John Wick has reached the milestone of 1.011 billion USD after four films. John Wick 4 (released on March 24) with a production budget of 100 million USD earned 183 million USD in the domestic market and 425 million USD in the international market, becoming the highest-grossing film. In its first week of release, the film earned 137.5 million USD, ranking first in 72 countries and territories.
"This achievement is a fitting tribute to the hard work of director Chad Stahelski, producers Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee and Keanu Reeves, who have all given their all to each film. We would like to thank audiences around the world for helping us reach this milestone," said Joe Drake, chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.
John Wick 4 continues to tell the story of assassin John Wick and his journey against an organization called the High Table. Stahelski's work was rated 8.1/10 by IMDb - the highest of the four parts and received many positive reviews from critics. Page IndieWire wrote: "The John Wick series has always improved with each installment. In the fourth installment, Chad Stahelski proves why he is one of the best filmmakers in the action genre. Keanu Reeves has the role of a lifetime." Boston Globe also commented: "Despite its long running time of 169 minutes, not a single second of the film passes meaninglessly."
In an interview with Pagesix In March, actor Keanu Reeves said: "I love playing roles in action movies, especially John Wick. During filming, sometimes I get injured, but that's not a problem."
According to EW , Reeves was cast as John Wick through a conversation between his agent and producer Basil Iwanyk. "Reeves' agent suggested him to me. I thought, 'Reeves is one of the best action actors of the last 25 years, but now he's in these underrated movies.' Then we gave the script to Reeves and said, 'Hey, you're not done yet.'"
John Wick released the first part in 2014 and grossed $587 million over three parts. Lionsgate has not announced a production date for the fifth part, however, the spin-off film is called Ballerina with the appearance of Ana de Armas expected to be released in June 2024.
