Pickleball – a sport that combines tennis, badminton and table tennis – is gradually becoming a favorite choice of many Vietnamese people, especially in big cities.
However, due to the rapid growth and high popularity of the sport, many participants are not fully equipped with the knowledge to play sports safely, especially in hot and humid weather conditions.
Dr. Duong Tien Can – a sports medicine expert who has accompanied the Vietnamese national teams at the SEA Games, Asian Games and Olympics – said that up to 80% of the patients he has recently received are pickleball players.
According to him, this figure reflects a worrying reality: players have not properly assessed the health and injury risks of high-intensity exercise in extreme weather conditions.
“Sports players in general and pickleball players in particular should absolutely avoid practicing during peak sunlight hours, especially from 10am to 4pm, or should not play on outdoor courts without shade.
Even playing early in the morning in hot weather and high humidity can potentially cause heat overload, affecting the heart and circulation," Dr. Can warned.
He also noted that high-impact sports like pickleball require players to be physically fit.
Before, during and after playing, it is necessary to supplement enough water, minerals and electrolytes to maintain homeostasis and avoid dehydration leading to dizziness, fainting or even stroke.
A notable sign is feeling dizzy, lightheaded or unusually tired while playing. “If you experience these symptoms, you should absolutely not try to continue playing, but should immediately stop, find a cool place to rest, drink water and monitor your health.
“Trying to exceed your personal tolerance in hot weather is very dangerous,” the expert warned.
In addition to physical preparation and mental state, accessories are also extremely important for pickleball players - a sport that has created a fever, especially among office workers.
Dr. Can recounted the story of meeting a family consisting of a parent and two young children playing on a pickleball court but wearing inappropriate, slippery footwear, leading to the risk of sprained ankles, sprains or joint damage.
“Standard shoes and equipment are the minimum requirements for safety during exercise. In addition, having a coach to guide players will help them understand techniques, adjust movements and distribute strength appropriately,” he emphasized.
According to Dr. Can, playing sports is essential for physical and mental health, especially in modern life.
However, only when players have a basic understanding of exercise safety, know how to assess their own physical condition and adhere to scientific principles in training, can those benefits be fully utilized.
“Playing sports properly helps to stay healthy. But if you play spontaneously, without adequate preparation in terms of physical strength, equipment or medical knowledge, it is easy to pay the price with your health – even your life,” sports medicine expert Duong Tien Can warned.
