A serious incident occurred with the Ever Lunar container ship of Evergreen Marine Corp. About 50 containers fell into the sea off the port of Callao, Peru, leading to the temporary closure of the port and disruption of operations.
According to Evergreen, the incident occurred at around 9:40 a.m. on Friday, August 1, 2025, while the ship was anchored waiting to enter port. The ship suddenly shook violently, possibly due to a tsunami from an earthquake in Russia, bad sea conditions, or unusually large waves. As a result, dozens of containers at the stern of the ship fell into the sea.
The Ever Lunar was carrying about 7,000 containers at the time of the incident, according to Amilcar Velasquez, an official at the Port of Callao. He also said the containers that fell into the sea contained plastic products and no hazardous substances. This helps to rule out the possibility of marine pollution.
Fortunately, the entire crew is safe and no one was injured. Currently, local authorities and Evergreen are coordinating to investigate the exact cause of the incident, and at the same time taking measures to ensure maritime safety and the environment.
Previously, Evergreen had a serious incident with the Ever Feat container ship operated by Evergreen Shipping (Taiwan), when the ship capsized and a series of containers were thrown due to severe weather off the coast of Brazil. The incident caused about 30-40 containers to be severely damaged, some falling into the sea or hanging dangerously on the deck.
According to Uruguayan maritime authorities, the incident occurred late on July 28 as the Ever Feat was en route from the port of Navegantes, Brazil, to Montevideo, Uruguay. Strong winds and large waves in the state of Rio Grande do Sul caused the ship to shake violently, collapsing at least two rows of containers. Images from the scene showed many containers crushed or hanging on the port side of the ship.
When the ship docked in Montevideo on July 29, local authorities established a exclusion zone around the ship to conduct salvage operations and remove dangerous cargo. Several containers were confirmed to contain fertilizer, raising concerns about chemical leaks and impacts on the marine environment. However, there was no indication that any of the containers contained toxic substances.
Evergreen is currently working with maritime authorities, classification societies and rescue forces to assess the damage and determine the cause. Experts believe that the ship’s violent shaking in severe weather conditions may have exceeded the design limits for the stability of the cargo on board.
These incidents are one of the latest shocks for Evergreen, as the company is still dealing with the legal consequences of the Ever Given ship blocking the Suez Canal in 2021.
The media commented that these accidents have attracted great attention in the shipping industry, especially since they all happened in such close proximity and were all managed by Evergreen. With hundreds of containers involved, and even cases where containers have been confirmed to have fallen into the sea, these incidents once again place strict requirements on maritime safety, the ability to respond to bad weather, and the insurance and recovery responsibilities of the parties involved.
