On April 21, Pope Francis died at the Vatican at the age of 88. The Vatican is initiating religious procedures after Pope Francis' death, including the destruction of the Fisherman's Ring and the bulla, the official seal used in papal documents.
Each new Pope is given a new Fisherman's Ring and bulla, to prevent the risk of forgery of the document. Both are broken with a hammer after the Pope's death, a ritual that has been in place since 1521.
Today, the risk of forgery of documents is low, and the destruction of the Fisherman's Ring is largely symbolic, marking the end of the Pope's reign.

Pope Francis wears the Fisherman's Ring during official ceremonies. In everyday life, Pope Francis has switched to using the silver ring from his time as a Cardinal.
Pope Francis' Fisherman's Ring is not a new one either. Unlike many new Popes who wear new Fisherman's Rings handcrafted by jewelers, Pope Francis went against tradition and requested that a gold-plated silver ring belonging to Pope Paul IV's secretary be recycled as a Fisherman's Ring.
The Fisherman's Ring has a history dating back to the 13th century. This Pope's ring of power symbolizes the head of the Holy See's right to lead and guide his flock.
The ring is named after Saint Peter, who was a fisherman. The ring is usually made of pure gold and engraved with an image of Saint Peter and the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Traditionally, the Cardinal Camerlengo, the Cardinal who directs the administrative affairs of the Holy See during the "vacancy of the see", is the one to destroy the Fisherman's ring and the bulla in the presence of the College of Cardinals.
After Pope Francis' predecessor, Benedict XVI, became the first pope to abdicate in six centuries, the Vatican adopted a new approach: instead of destroying the Fisherman's Ring entirely, it used a chisel to carve a deep cross into the ring's surface.
Cardinal Regent Kevin Joseph Farrell will be the one to carry out this process before the conclave to elect a new Pope is held.
