Thua Thien - Hue After 16 years of abandonment, the giant dragon statue in Thuy Tien Lake has deteriorated and could collapse at any time, so it must be demolished.
Located in Thuy Bang Commune, Hue City, Thuy Tien Lake Amusement Park was built by Hue Ancient Capital Tourism Company in 2001 with a budget of 70 billion VND. The park is 49 hectares wide, with many items such as: Aquarium, water music stage, water game area, walking path around the lake. Of which, the most prominent is the 20 m high, 50 m long dragon-shaped aquarium winding in the middle of the lake, which was once featured in the Huffington Post (USA).

In 2004, the park was completed, and the investors and Thua Thien Hue province expected it to be a high-class entertainment venue for locals and tourists. However, after a short time of operation, the amusement park was deserted, and the revenue could not cover the expenses. Some of the animals in the aquarium had to be moved elsewhere.
In 2008, Haco Hue Company took over to upgrade and invest in the park project, but by 2017 it was no longer able to complete it. The playground was abandoned, the items were severely damaged and could not be used.
To revive the amusement park, Thua Thien Hue province called for more potential investors, but no business was interested. The province had to reclaim the project land and hand it over to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment for management.

After 16 years of abandonment, the giant statue that was once featured in American newspapers has become shabby. The glass doors are broken, the iron stairs are rusty, the aquarium is full of trash. Some concrete panels have exposed iron, in danger of collapsing. The walls are covered with graffiti.
In addition to the reason for degradation, Mr. Truong Phuoc Tuan, Director of the Land Fund Development Center of Thua Thien Hue Province, said that the dragon statue in Thuy Tien Lake Park and other items are the assets of the enterprise. This asset has been sold off by the Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development and put up for auction to recover capital.
"After more than 20 auctions, a business has to buy back the assets to hand over the land to the state. Because the dragon statue and other assets belong to the business, it is impossible to use the budget to buy them back," said Mr. Tuan. After the items are dismantled, the center will hand over the land to Hue City to renovate it into a park for the community.

According to the plan, after taking over Thuy Tien Lake Park, Hue City will invest 20 billion VND to renovate and build a 2 km long, 4.5-6 m wide walking path around the lake, paved with granite on a concrete foundation. Lighting and drainage systems will be invested. In the future, Thuy Tien Lake will be a community park, where people can freely play and camp like in Da Vien Park in the middle of the Huong River.
Previously on January 28, a representative of Dai Nguyen Nam Trading and Service Company Limited, the company that won the auction for assets at Thuy Tien Lake Park, said that after the Lunar New Year, the dragon statue would be dismantled and demolished. "The dragon statue at the park is a masterpiece that probably has no other in our country. It is a pity to demolish it, but it must be done to hand over the land to the government," this person said.
