The result was not surprising when the previous two consecutive SEA Games champion had to give up his racket to Rifki Fitriadi with a score of 0-2 (4/6, 1/6), accepting second place. At one point during the match, Hoang Nam needed medical attention. However, he still tried his best not to give up halfway.

After the match, Ly Hoang Nam came to shake hands and congratulate Rifki Fitriadi. "I'm certainly not satisfied with this result, but I tried my best today. The Indonesian player also played very well and deserved to win," Hoang Nam said, adding that right after the team event, he had an acute stomach ache so he could only eat light foods like porridge and bread. Before the final match, he also had a fever of 39 degrees Celsius.
"My health and form are not good, but I think that since I have reached the final, I will step onto the court to compete, and only when I feel I can no longer compete will I accept to stop. I know that Vietnamese tennis fans have high expectations for me and want to see me win. I feel guilty for not being able to meet these expectations, but I have tried my best and hope that I and the Vietnamese tennis team will continue to receive support and encouragement from everyone," Ly Hoang Nam shared.
Ly Hoang Nam's defeat in the men's singles final also ended the SEA Games as Vietnamese tennis did not expect when they only won 2 silver medals (men's team, men's singles).
