Lyon must sell players. |
According to EuroFoot , Lyon is taking a series of emergency measures to appeal the above decision, from owner John Textor selling shares in "brother" clubs such as Botafogo (Brazil) and Crystal Palace (England), to plans to liquidate the squad to solve financial difficulties.
The first star to leave was Rayan Cherki, the brightest talent at Lyon’s academy, who joined Manchester City for €35 million. Alexandre Lacazette, the veteran captain, also said goodbye when his contract expired. But that was just the beginning of the wave of departures that awaited Groupama.
Lyon are expected to sell a number of key players this summer. The three most notable names are Corentin Tolisso, Thiago Almada and Malick Fofana.
Tolisso helped Lyon earn 41.5 million euros when he moved to Bayern Munich before returning to the club as a free agent in 2022. However, with the current situation, the board of directors is forced to consider parting ways with the former French international to save on wages and find new sources of income.
Thiago Almada is a rising talent in Argentine football. After an impressive performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the 24-year-old midfielder is valued at around 25 million euros by Transfermarkt and has attracted interest from many European clubs thanks to his excellent technical background.
Malick Fofana, only 20 years old, is considered one of Lyon's biggest assets. Transfermarkt values the player at 30 million euros - enough to help the club reduce its debt, which is still 175 million euros.
In addition to the above trio, two other first-team players, Georges Mikautadze and Moussa Niakhate, could also bring in a total of nearly 40 million euros if sold at the right price.
This is not the first time Lyon has been forced to sell off its squad. In August 2024, the club had to sell almost all of its players to pay off a debt of 300 million euros.
Despite the financial burden being eased, the decline on the pitch has plunged Lyon deeper into crisis. A sixth-place finish in Ligue 1 last season meant missing out on the Champions League, a source of income that used to bring in tens of millions of euros a year. A shock exit in the Europa League quarter-finals to Manchester United has pushed Lyon even further.
The future of the club that was an icon of French football in the early 2000s now hangs in the balance. The battle to stay in Ligue 1, both on the pitch and in the boardroom, will be fierce - and could decide the fate of the club.
