Striker Rasmus Hojlund seemed to help MU overcome his former team when he scored 2 goals in the first 30 minutes. But Marcus Rashford was sent off in the 42nd minute, changing the game and possibly deciding MU's fate with a 3rd defeat after 4 matches in Group A.
MU received another shock this season
Mohamed Elyounoussi and Diogo Goncalves levelled the score at 2-2 for Copenhagen before half-time, with Bruno Fernandes scoring from the spot to put the English side ahead again in the second half. But goals in the final seven minutes from Lukas Lerager and 17-year-old Roony Bardghji secured Copenhagen's first Champions League win since 2016.
With this defeat, MU (3 points) fell to the bottom of the table, 1 point behind Galatasaray and Copenhagen with 2 matches left in the group stage. The "Red Devils" will travel to Galatasaray in the next match, before welcoming the top team Bayern Munich.
Rashford's red card prevented MU from maintaining their advantage.
Defeat will once again increase the pressure on United manager Erik ten Hag after a disastrous start to the season in both the Premier League and Champions League. The Dutchman may have regretted Rashford's dismissal after his side played brilliantly in the first half.
In the same group match, Harry Kane scored a brace in the final 10 minutes to help Bayern Munich beat Galatasaray 2-1. This result helped Bayern Munich to secure a ticket to the next round with 12 points after 4 wins. The German team is now undefeated in 38 matches in the group stage, another Champions League record.
Copenhagen had a spectacular comeback against MU
In contrast to MU's disappointing performance, Arsenal beat Sevilla 2-0 thanks to goals from Leandro Trossard and Bukayo Saka in Group B. With 3 wins after 4 matches, Arsenal is currently at the top of the group and is one step closer to the next round while being 4 points ahead of the second-placed PSV Eindhoven.
Elsewhere, Real Madrid advanced to the round of 16 with a 3-0 win over Braga thanks to goals from Brahim Diaz, Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes. With this result, the Spanish team maintained their perfect record in Group C after four matches, seven points ahead of second-placed Napoli (who drew 1-1 with Union Berlin). Group D was also decided early with Inter Milan and Real Sociedad (both with 10 points) qualifying after beating Salzburg (1-0) and Benfica (3-1) respectively in the early morning matches.
So far, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Real Sociedad, defending champions Manchester City and RB Leipzig have already secured their place in the next round even though there are still 2 rounds left.
