Since she was 17, Alisa Vandercruyssen, now 28, from Michigan (USA), noticed that her legs, arms and stomach started to accumulate excess fat. This was really unusual because she had an active lifestyle, according to the Daily Express (UK).
Alisa Vandercruyssen has a disease called Lipedema, which causes abnormal fat accumulation under her skin.
She went to the doctor for check-ups many times and was diagnosed with obesity. Alisa tried to diet and maintain exercise . She even took weight loss pills for 6 months but her legs, arms and stomach continued to accumulate fat.
"I lost weight with the guidance of a personal trainer. I compared my before photo with my six-month workout photo and it looked worse," Alisa said.
British media did not reveal Alisa's specific weight. However, during her later treatment, she estimated that the amount of abnormal fat accumulated on her body could be up to about 23 kg.
By chance, she saw a YouTube video about chronic lipedema. She immediately suspected her condition and went to the hospital for a check-up. She was later diagnosed with Lipedema.
Lipedema is a rare condition that usually affects women. It causes abnormal accumulation of fat tissue in the legs, hips, buttocks, and sometimes the arms. These areas also develop lipedema nodules that look like orange peels, which are unsightly and painful for the patient.
After being diagnosed, Alisa went to Lipedema Surgery Center in Roswell, Georgia (USA) for surgery. Doctors said that Alisa would need at least 6 surgeries to remove the excess fat accumulated in her body due to the disease.
Currently, she has completed the first surgery and successfully removed 6.5 liters of fat from her legs. The cost of this surgery is 8,000 USD, about 189 million VND. After the surgery, Alisa felt very excited and optimistic. She will continue to perform the remaining surgeries in the near future, according to Daily Express .
