MSc.-BS NGUYEN THANH LUAN, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, replied: Your case may be retinopathy due to complications of diabetes. Retinopathy is one of the common eye complications in people with diabetes. This is one of the leading causes of blindness in the world . Statistics show that people who have had diabetes for 10-15 years have a rate of developing diabetic retinopathy of up to 90%.
Clinical examination in the early stages of the disease can help doctors detect specific lesions on the retina, thereby promptly providing appropriate treatment methods for the patient. In the stage of non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy, without macular edema, the patient only needs to have regular check-ups and good control of blood sugar, blood pressure and blood lipids. In the stage of proliferative diabetic retinopathy, the patient will be prescribed laser photocoagulation, intraocular injection or surgery.
To effectively prevent complications of diabetes, not only in the eyes but also in other parts of the body, compliance with treatment and good blood sugar control are extremely important. Patients need to control blood sugar by taking oral diabetes medications or injecting insulin at home (if indicated).
