Associate Professor Nguyen Van Huy was born in 1945, the son of the late scholar Nguyen Van Huyen, who served as Minister of Education from 1946 to 1975. His mother is Ms. Vi Kim Ngoc (Tay ethnic group), from Lang Son, daughter of Governor of Thai Binh Vi Van Dinh.

Associate Professor Nguyen Van Huy has been involved in ethnological research and the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology for over 40 years. In the 1970s, he continuously conducted field research and basic surveys of ethnic groups with small populations and lacking information in the highlands, border areas, and border provinces of Vietnam - China, Vietnam - Laos, such as ethnic groups belonging to the Mon - Khmer, Ha Nhi - Lo Lo, Ka Dai language families, etc. His research has brought many new insights into the ethnic groups being studied, contributing significantly to the primary task of ethnology at that time, which was to determine the composition of ethnic groups in Vietnam.

After being appointed Deputy Director of the Institute of Ethnology (Vietnam), under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences in 1983, Associate Professor Nguyen Van Huy pioneered a new field, which is ethnic sociology. He and his colleagues conducted the first sociological studies in many provinces across the country, from North to South. His main research direction at that time focused on contemporary life issues as well as the development of ethnic minorities and ethnic relations in Vietnam.

When he took over as Director of the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology in 1995, he transformed the museum into one of the most attractive and dynamic museums in Vietnam today. At the same time, he opened up many new directions for Vietnamese museums in preserving, protecting and promoting cultural heritages such as linking museums with the community, organizing performances, folk art performances, and handicrafts at the museum, building educational programs at the museum, and expanding the network with regional and international museums.

Associate Professor Nguyen Van Huy and his family established the Nguyen Van Huyen Museum in 2014 to display the life and career of his father, Professor Nguyen Van Huyen. The museum hopes to convey to the public the message that the life, together with the documents and memories of a person and a family, contributes to increasing understanding of the history, society, and culture of a period and a country. Preserving and conserving the documents and artifacts of each individual and each family will enrich the heritage of the locality and the country.
