Although the 2024 - 2025 season did not achieve the expected results, Man City is still trying their best at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
In the group stage, Man City scored 13 goals, more than any other team, had the most shots (60) and had the highest expected goals total (9.9).
Manager Pep Guardiola boasts a perfect record at the FIFA Club World Cup. Man City are the only team to have won all three of their group games. Their most recent victory was a 5-2 thrashing of Juventus, which saw them qualify for the last 16 as Group G winners.
Rodri's return from a long-term knee injury was good news for City in the league. The Spaniard played 125 of the 270 minutes, and made City look much better when he was on the pitch. He made more defensive-breaking passes (25) than any other City player in the league.
Al Hilal, meanwhile, advanced to the knockout stages under new coach Simone Inzaghi, proving themselves tough to beat in a tough group that included Real Madrid and Salzburg.
Al Hilal secured their place in the next round with a 2-0 win over Pachuca, thanks to goals from Salem Al Dawsari and Marcos Leonardo. Al Dawsari has scored 27 goals in all competitions since the start of the 2024-25 season, while Marcos Leonardo has 26. The duo will continue to pose a threat to Man City.
Defensively, Al Hilal have an experienced backline with players like Joao Cancelo, Kalidou Koulibaly and Renan Lodi. In Cancelo’s case, he will be facing his former club Man City, whom he left under somewhat bitter circumstances in January 2023. Therefore, Cancelo is keen to get a win against his former club.
