Making a dictionary for young people to access Han Nom

Mr. Nguyen Quang Hong was born in 1940, hometown in Tra Kieu, Duy Xuyen, Quang Nam (now Da Nang).

He is a leading scientist in the field of Han Nom research. With more than 50 years of immersing himself in linguistic and Han Nom research, he has left clear marks in a series of self-edited or edited works (3 monographs, 2 Nom dictionaries, a collection of essays and a number of research books, annotations...).

Having devoted his whole life to linguistics, at an old age he still made efforts to compile and publish the 2,000-page Nom Dictionary in 2017.

The dictionary is highly appreciated by Han Nom research experts in both the US and Vietnam for its scientific nature and the values it contributes to Han Nom research.

During his lifetime, he shared the reason why he painstakingly compiled the massive dictionary because he wanted to preserve the existence of Nom script - a precious cultural heritage of the nation.

According to him, the young generation needs to be exposed to Nom script in one way or another. The most important direct approach is through a dictionary. With a relatively serious dictionary, young people will learn by themselves and inherit that heritage of the nation.
