Turki Alalshikh has business ties with Saade, the billionaire who owns land around Old Trafford. |
According to the Daily Mail , Manchester United's internal turmoil is after Turki Al-Sheikh - a powerful figure in Saudi Arabia's sports world - suddenly hinted that the Glazer family is negotiating to sell the club. However, what is happening behind the scenes seems to be more related to the giant new stadium project that co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is pursuing.
At the centre of the story is French billionaire Rodolphe Saade, chairman of shipping giant CMA CGM and owner of Freightliner. Saade controls much of the land around Old Trafford – an area seen as key to plans to build a new 100,000-seat stadium, which could cost up to £2bn.
It is worth noting that Saade once discussed cooperation with Turki Al-Sheikh himself, making the relationship between the parties sensitive. Some sources at Old Trafford believe that the real motive for the rumors of selling the club could be a financial trick, to "inflate" the price of MU shares or create attention among investors - something that is not uncommon in modern football.
After causing a storm on social networks, Al-Sheikh had to post a correction on the X platform (old Twitter): "I am not an investor, and they (the partners) are not from my country. I am just a fan, hoping that the change of ownership of MU will soon become a reality."
Meanwhile, Ratcliffe is still trying to find funding for the new stadium project. Last July, Old Trafford project manager Lord Seb Coe flew to New York to meet with potential investors.
Amid the speculation, Ratcliffe insisted that his relationship with the Glazers “remains good and collaborative”, and stressed the importance of local management: “We are local, they are across the ocean. MU needs a team that is actually here to operate.”
Putting aside the rumors, the story of Manchester United at this time probably does not lie in the change of ownership, but in the future of Old Trafford - where the old symbol is preparing to give way to a new dream, which can shape the entire next era of the "Red Devils".
