Man Utd won with Garnacho's super overhead kick

VnExpressVnExpress27/11/2023

19-year-old midfielder Alejandro Garnacho scored a back-kick to open the scoring as Man Utd beat Everton 3-0 in round 13 of the Premier League.

In the third minute, defender Diogo Dalot crossed the ball from the right wing to the left of Everton's penalty area, slightly backing Garnacho. The 19-year-old midfielder turned around, then leaned over and hooked the ball high into the far corner, leaving goalkeeper Jordan Pickford flying as far as he could but still couldn't reach it. After the ball hit the net, Garnacho jumped and spun to the familiar celebration of his idol Cristiano Ronaldo.

Garnacho also made a gesture to suggest the goal was a masterpiece, by wagging his fingers. He is the youngest Man Utd player to score at Goodison Park, surpassing Wayne Rooney's record. And Garnacho's goal also recalled Rooney's masterpiece against Man City in February 2011, or Ronaldo's overhead kick against Juventus in April 2018.

Garnacho, 19, was born in Madrid, Spain, but has an Argentine mother, so he plays for the national team. He was a product of Getafe and Atletico's training camps, before joining Man Utd at the age of 16. The overhead kick brought Garnacho his first goal in the Premier League this season.

Apart from Garnacho's superb strike, Man Utd's attack did not create any clear-cut chances in the first half, while Everton wasted a series of chances. Notably in the 32nd minute, goalkeeper Andre Onana twice saved Dominic Calvert-Lewin's shot, before midfielder Kobbie Mainoo slid to clear the ball on the goal line from Jack Harrison's shot. Mainoo is only 18 years old, making his first Premier League start, but he looked mature whenever he had the ball.

Everton played aggressively, pressing intensely, just days after being deducted 10 points for violating Financial Fair Play regulations. The Goodison Park crowd protested by whistling and booing every time the referee made a decision that was unfavorable to the home team. By the 10th minute, tens of thousands of spectators held up a sign with the Premier League logo and the word "corruption".

Everton fans were even more furious when their team was awarded a penalty in the 52nd minute. Referee John Brooks initially showed Anthony Martial a yellow card for diving in the penalty area. However, VAR intervened and Brooks realised that defender Ashley Young had tripped Martial, so he overturned the yellow card and awarded the penalty to the visitors.

Young had already received a yellow card, but still argued with the referee. However, the Man Utd player came to stop the 38-year-old defender to avoid receiving another yellow card. Young played for Man Utd from 2011-2020, and has only played for Everton since this season.

The penalty knocked Everton's fighting spirit out of the game, as Marcus Rashford made no mistake as he fired the penalty into the top left corner to make it 2-0. He ended a nearly three-month goal drought at Man Utd, and initially had no intention of celebrating. However, his teammates pushed Rashford back to the home crowd, and he shouted to clear his head.

Another Man Utd striker also ended his goal drought, Martial, with the decisive goal in the 75th minute. Receiving a pass from Bruno Fernandes, the French striker rushed down to face the goalkeeper and chipped the ball past Pickford into the net. This was Martial's first goal in three months, and Everton continued to be his favorite target, as this was the ninth match he scored against this opponent.

The win at Goodison Park saw Man Utd return to the Premier League's top six, six points behind leaders Arsenal. Their goal difference returned to zero thanks to the big win, and all three forwards were able to quench their thirst for goals, despite coach Erik ten Hag having to sit in the stands due to a touchline ban. This is the motivation for them to find three points at Galatasaray, in the penultimate round of the Champions League group stage on Wednesday night, November 29.
