Prime Minister: Vietnam determined to successfully organize APEC Year 2027 in all aspects

(laichau.gov.vn) On the evening of July 28, at the Government headquarters, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired the ceremony to announce the establishment of the Vietnam APEC 2027 National Committee.

Also attending were Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son, Chairman of the APEC 2027 National Committee, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung; members of the APEC 2027 National Committee; leaders of ministries, departments, branches and localities; ambassadors and representatives of representative agencies of APEC member economies in Vietnam.

Previously, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh signed a Decision to establish the APEC 2027 National Committee consisting of 19 members.

"5 developments" to organize APEC Year 2027

Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh assessed that hosting APEC Year 2027 is an honor for Vietnam and also an international responsibility, demonstrating Vietnam's responsibility to the international community, and demonstrating the trust and confidence of APEC members in Vietnam.

The year 2027 marks nearly 30 years since Vietnam became an APEC member. Throughout that journey, the Asia-Pacific region and the APEC Forum have always been important priorities in Vietnam's foreign policy, defense policy, and economic development policy.

The Prime Minister said that Vietnam persistently pursues an independent, self-reliant, diversified, and multilateral foreign policy; is a good friend, a reliable partner, and a responsible member of the international community for peace, stability, cooperation, and development; implements the "4 no's" defense policy; builds an independent, self-reliant economy associated with proactive, active, and deep international integration, substantively and effectively; and combines national strength with the strength of the times.

For Vietnam, APEC cooperation is an important driving force to open markets, attract investment, transfer technology and improve economic competitiveness.

According to the Prime Minister, the world and the region are witnessing fundamental and profound changes, creating challenges for economies and the global cooperation environment, and many national, comprehensive, and global issues that no country can solve alone.

Emphasizing that the current difficulties and challenges are still not as great as those during the period when Vietnam waged the national liberation struggle, was besieged, embargoed, and began to reform, the Prime Minister said that in the face of difficulties and challenges, Vietnam has promoted the spirit of solidarity and unity, strived to rise up more strongly, maintained calmness and courage, and proposed appropriate, flexible, and effective tasks and solutions. Moreover, at present, opportunities and advantages are also intertwined with difficulties and challenges.

The Prime Minister said that in 2024, Vietnam's GDP will grow by 7.1%, in the first 6 months of 2025, economic growth will reach 7.52% and is striving to realize the growth target of 8.3-8.5% in 2025, creating momentum, creating a position, creating a solid force for the double-digit growth period in the next decade, towards the two 100-year goals set by 2030 (becoming a developing country with modern industry, high middle income) and 2045 (being a developed country, high income).

The Prime Minister said that by building on the experience from previous hostings and learning from other countries, Vietnam will try its best to make APEC 2027 more successful than the previous two hostings (2006 and 2017).

The Prime Minister emphasized that Vietnam is determined to successfully organize APEC Year 2027 in both multilateral and bilateral aspects, regional and international aspects; contributing to concretizing APEC's action programs and Vision, further promoting the role of APEC - the driving force of growth and economic connectivity in the region and the world. At the same time, affirming Vietnam's position and stature in the international arena, and strengthening bilateral relations between Vietnam and member economies and partners.

Along with that, Vietnam will strive to ensure that the activities achieve comprehensive success in political, economic, cultural and social aspects, bringing practical benefits to the people and business community; at the same time, APEC will be successfully organized in all aspects, from content to organization, reception and logistics; ensuring that the events take place effectively and according to plan.

Vietnam is currently expanding Phu Quoc International Airport, building a new convention center and upgrading electricity and water infrastructure, connecting roads..., both to serve the APEC Summit Week and to create momentum for long-term development.

To achieve the above goals, the Prime Minister emphasized "5 developments" including: Promoting the spirit of cooperation among APEC members; promoting the spirit of innovation and creativity; promoting consensus, determination, and high sense of responsibility among agencies and localities; promoting the support and coordination of APEC members, the participation and contribution of leaders and the business community; promoting the results of APEC conferences to be more effective in developing each country's economy and achieving the goals of each APEC session.

The Prime Minister warmly welcomed the presence of delegates, including ambassadors and representatives of APEC member agencies at the announcement ceremony; he believed that with the spirit of unity, determination and support from international friends, APEC Year 2027 will be as successful and effective as possible, contributing to peace, cooperation, development and prosperity in Asia-Pacific and the world.

Vietnam confidently enters APEC 2027

Speaking at the announcement ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son, Chairman of the APEC 2027 National Committee, respectfully thanked APEC member economies for always accompanying and supporting Vietnam over the past time, and hoped to continue receiving valuable support in the process of organizing APEC Year 2027.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the two successful hostings in 2006 and 2017 are a solid foundation for Vietnam to confidently enter APEC 2027 with a new vision, high determination and aspiration for breakthrough. In the context of rapid and complex changes in the region and the world, requiring members to continue to be steadfast in the core values and goals of the Forum, hosting APEC 2027 will be an important test to affirm Vietnam's leading position and adaptability, to be able to transform challenges into opportunities, turn vision into concrete actions, and bring APEC into a new period of development.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, to successfully organize APEC Year 2027, in terms of roadmap, it is necessary to determine 2025 as the year to comprehensively launch preparation work, 2026 as the year to basically complete it, and 2027 as the year to successfully host the activities.

Accordingly, the National Committee will review the work and soon deploy a number of key tasks. Regarding the organization and personnel, promptly establish 5 Sub-committees and a Secretariat to ensure overall direction, coordination, timely and effective coordination between ministries, branches and localities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Industry and Trade shall preside over and coordinate with members of the Content Subcommittee to promptly propose directions for developing themes, priorities, and ideas for APEC Year 2027.

In terms of infrastructure - logistics - finance, APEC 2027 will have more than 150 conferences and meetings, so in addition to Phu Quoc (An Giang) - the host of APEC Summit Week, which is the most important event of the year, it is necessary to proactively coordinate to review and upgrade infrastructure, determine locations for Ministerial Conferences, Senior Officials' Conferences and other activities.

In parallel with domestic preparations, Vietnam needs to strengthen consultation, information exchange and close coordination with APEC member economies, especially South Korea - host of APEC 2025 and China - host of APEC 2026, Mexico - host of APEC 2028 to ensure continuity between years and contribute to optimizing resources, while learning and sharing experiences in preparing and successfully organizing all APEC years up to 2028.

Speaking at the ceremony, the representative of APEC 2025 host, Korean Ambassador to Vietnam Choi Young Sam, assessed that every 10 years, Vietnam successfully organizes an APEC, which has demonstrated Vietnam's leading role in promoting peace, stability and common prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region. Choosing Phu Quoc as the venue also shows Vietnam's clear vision.

Noting that Korea - the host of APEC will closely cooperate with relevant parties, especially Vietnam, the Ambassador thanked Vietnam for its close support for Korea's hosting of APEC this year.

The Ambassador affirmed that Korea fully believes that Vietnam will continue to promote its leadership role in APEC 2027 and will support Vietnam in this process with the hope that Vietnam "will once again shine in the international and regional arena".

Representative of the host of APEC 2026, Mr. Wu Guoquan, Minister Counselor, Chinese Embassy in Vietnam also highly appreciated Vietnam's success in hosting the APEC forum twice, making an important contribution to the APEC action strategy. With Vietnam hosting APEC in 2027, all parties clearly recognized Vietnam's role and Vietnam will continue to contribute to the prosperity and development of the Asia-Pacific region.

Mr. Wu Guoquan said that China has received support from Vietnam in organizing the APEC forum in 2026 and China also supports Vietnam in hosting APEC 2027. He hopes that the two sides will successfully cooperate with each other, creating a solid foundation to promote APEC cooperation to a new level.
