In Kim Son commune, Mr. Nguyen Van Nam’s family was one of the first households to start raising bees for honey. With a scale of more than 500 bee colonies, Mr. Nam’s family’s annual revenue is not less than 700 million VND.
Not only Mr. Nam’s family, hundreds of families in this hilly and semi-mountainous land are also living well thanks to his honey farming. Statistics from the Kim Son Commune People’s Committee show that there are currently about 2,500 bee colonies in the area. Each year, the locality supplies the market with more than 40,000 liters of honey.
To support farmers in completing the production process, the People's Committee of Kim Son commune has established a honey beekeeping cooperative under the Kim Son Agricultural Service Cooperative. Currently, the cooperative has 35 members, regularly exchanging experiences in honey bee care; especially supporting each other in product consumption.
Director of Kim Son Agricultural Service Cooperative Nguyen Xuan Quyen said that along with annual technical training, Son Tay Town People's Committee has supported cooperative members to develop 300 bee colonies and 1,000 beehives. The collective brand "Kim Son Honey" has also been built and developed since 2018.
Also according to Mr. Quyen, honey of Kim Son Agricultural Service Cooperative is one of the first products of Son Tay town to participate in the evaluation and classification in the One Commune One Product (OCOP) Program of Hanoi People 's Committee.
The results were very encouraging when Kim Son honey was evaluated and ranked 4 stars by the Hanoi OCOP Council. This achievement has become an important premise for Kim Son honey to affirm its brand, reach the capital's consumers and reach further markets.
Kim Son Commune People’s Committee Chairwoman Le Thi Chinh said that the hilly terrain with many flower forests is an advantage for the locality in developing honey bee colonies. The profession requires low investment capital, but is contributing to improving the lives of hundreds of farming households.
Statistics over the past years show that the average income of the people has been increasing continuously over the years, currently reaching more than 76 million VND/year; the whole commune now has no poor households. This is thanks to the important contribution from beekeeping for honey.
Although the consumption of Kim Son honey is still quite stable, the people of Kim Son commune hope that the departments and branches of Hanoi city will continue to pay attention, open more training courses on care techniques, and provide financial support to replicate the model. Especially supporting cooperatives and beekeepers here to build sustainable production - consumption chains, in order to increase the economic value of Kim Son honey products.
According to statistics, up to now, in Son Tay town, there are 78 products of 14 cooperatives, enterprises, and production and business households that have been evaluated and classified as 3-star and 4-star OCOP products, mainly in the food, handicraft, and decoration industries such as peanut candy and sesame candy of Duong Lam commune; dong vermicelli of Co Dong commune; fish cakes and chrysanthemum tea of Son Dong commune; honey of Kim Son commune; melons and vegetables of Vien Son ward; Phu Nhi rice cakes of Phu Thinh ward and many other agricultural products...
