Jota's mother, Isabel, burst into tears. |
On the morning of August 17, at Molineux Stadium, Wolves suffered a 0-4 home defeat to Man City in the first round of the Premier League. However, that result could not overshadow the special tribute the club paid to Jota, who passed away in a tragic traffic accident in Spain last month.
Jota's wife Rute Cardoso was at Molineux with Ruben Neves, Jota's former Wolves and Portugal team-mate, who is also one of his closest friends and was a pallbearer at the funeral.
Jota and Andre Silva’s parents, Isabel and Joaquim Silva, were also present, unable to contain their emotions and burst into tears at the outpouring of support from Wolves fans. A giant poster was hung on the south stand of Molineux, depicting Jota celebrating a goal for Wolves – a period when he led the team to the Championship title in 2017/18 and to Premier League survival (2018-2020).
Alongside the poster, another banner was also spread across the pitch with the words: “We will miss you when you walk on the golden fields”, inspired by Sting's famous song, carrying a deep meaning of remembrance.
The Molineux crowd stood and applauded for 60 seconds in the 18th minute – a number that represents the number 18 shirt Jota wore in 131 games for Wolves. Earlier, in Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth, fans and players also held a series of tributes to Jota.
