On September 4, in a small alley of Residential Group No. 17 (Bim Son Ward, Thanh Hoa), mother Lam Thi Phuc, Head of the "Godmother" Club, and members were reviewing the final preparations before the opening ceremony.
Tomorrow morning, not only will Mom worry about her family, she will also have a special task that has become a routine: taking her two sisters, Hoang Thi Kim Ngan (first grade) and Hoang Thi Anh Ngoc (second grade) to school.
Their father was disabled in one arm and their mother died early, so the path to school for the two sisters was more difficult than that of their friends. However, since the mothers in the Club have joined in, each new school year has become warmer and more fulfilling for the children.
Mother Lam Thi Phuc buys new clothes for her daughter Hoang Thi Kim Ngan (born 2019).
The new schoolbags and fragrant uniforms had been prepared by the mothers a few days before. For children like Ngan and Ngoc, the mothers had promised to come early to take their children to the school yard, hold their hands and take them to class, and rearrange their study corners.
For older children in high school, even if they can go by themselves, mothers will still follow, call to encourage, and ensure that their children have a happy and meaningful first day of school. It is not just a simple action, but a message of love, the deepest encouragement for children to firmly step on the path of education.
The loving arms of non-blood related mothers
The "Godmother" Club of the Women's Association of Residential Group No. 17 was established in 2018, with only 5 core members, all of whom are dedicated association officials.
Currently, mothers are extending their loving arms, sponsoring 14 orphans and children in especially difficult circumstances in the area. Among them, there are 11 children who have lost one or both parents, 1 child has a congenital disability and 2 children from poor families. The children are of different ages, from preschool to high school.
The work of these "non-blood mothers" does not stop at providing material support. Mother Phuc shared that what is more important is paying close attention to the spiritual life, psychology and future orientation of her children.
"We often take turns going to each other's homes to teach our children and instruct them on necessary life skills, from personal hygiene, cleaning the house to how to behave and communicate. Especially for girls entering puberty, the presence of mothers is a strong spiritual support, helping them overcome confusion and changes in their psychology and physiology," said Phuc's mother.
Mother Lam Thi Phuc tutors her daughter Nguyen Thi Mai, a 7th grader at Xi Mang Secondary School, to review lessons in preparation for the new school year.
Nguyen Thi Mai, a 7th grader at Xi Mang Secondary School, lives with her mentally ill mother. Her family situation is extremely difficult. There was a time when she was so depressed and self-conscious that she dropped out of school. The mothers in the club did not mind the hardships, taking turns to visit her house: some to talk, some to pick her up and drop her off, persistently encouraging her to return to school. Now, she goes to school regularly, and a smile is gradually returning to her lips.
To ensure that the children do not feel deprived or disadvantaged, the Club regularly organizes gift giving on major holidays such as Lunar New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival or Vietnamese Family Day. Recently, in preparation for the opening of the new school year 2025-2026, mothers have prepared gifts for their children to prepare for the new school year.
Mothers in the "Godmother" Club organized a common birthday party and gave gifts, giving their children more confidence to enter the new school year 2025-2026.
On this occasion, each child received 10 notebooks, a new school bag and many other meaningful gifts. Not only that, the club also had a very special activity of organizing a birthday party for all the children, creating a warm family atmosphere, helping the children to bond more closely with each other and feel the fullness of love.
Accompanying your child into the new school year
The model of the "Godmother" Club in Residential Group No. 17 is just one of many bright spots of charity in the entire Bim Son Ward. According to Ms. Chu Thi Thu, Chairwoman of the Ward Women's Union, there are currently 32 "Godmother" groups operating in 35 women's branches in the ward.
The groups are sponsoring a total of 177 orphans and children in difficult circumstances (orphans due to the loss of parents due to illness, traffic accidents, and even painful losses due to the Covid-19 pandemic).
Ms. Chu Thi Thu, President of the Women's Union of Bim Son Ward, presented gifts to children on the occasion of the 2025-2026 school year.
Ms. Chu Thi Thu said: "In preparation for the opening of the new school year 2025-2026, the Ward Women's Union has connected with benefactors and businesses to give 177 gifts to the children, worth 1 million VND, 500,000 VND or 300,000 VND depending on the circumstances. Along with that, the 'Godmother' Clubs and each godmother also prepared additional gifts, cared for, encouraged the spirit, supported clothes and books so that the children could confidently enter the new school year."
In particular, on the upcoming opening day, the godmothers will directly shop, tailor clothes, take the children to school and arrange books and school supplies, helping the children have a thoughtful and more confident start.
The program's influence is growing stronger. Not only stopping at local support, the Ward Women's Union also connects and seeks better opportunities for the children's future. A touching story is when two young children were unfortunately orphaned by Covid-19, the mothers in the Union themselves stood up to introduce and support their children to be admitted toFPT University Da Nang, opening up a brighter future path.
The godmother in Bim Son ward gave gifts to encourage her children on the occasion of the new school year opening.
To maintain their activities, the clubs and "Godmother" groups still have to manage within a rather tight budget. For example, at Phuc's mother's club, the annual fund is only about 6 million VND, mainly from contributions from members (10,000 VND/person/year), the cooperation of some benefactors and fundraising through the model "Turning waste into money".
On this occasion, member Le Thi Chuyen (73 years old) also donated an additional 2 million VND, contributing to taking care of the children.
"Although we don't have much material things, the most valuable thing is the love and constant companionship of our mothers. We want our children to always feel that they are not alone, but that they always have a community and neighborhood that cares for and protects them."
Mother Lam Thi Phuc
Tomorrow, the Opening Ceremony of the 2025-2026 school year will take place nationwide. On all the streets of Bim Son ward, the image of "godmothers" in the blue uniforms of the Association will hold hands and take their children to school, promising to be a beautiful symbol, warming the hearts of many people.
Those loving arms are and will continue to light up dreams, give strength to children to confidently step into life, write brighter pages of the future. Everyone hopes that the program will continue to spread to have more resources, help children reduce their losses, and steadily rise up in life.
