- Recently, people in Minh Tien commune, Huu Lung district have converted ineffective farming land to grow jicama. Thereby, the model has brought practical economic efficiency, contributing to helping people increase their income.
As a pioneer in growing jicama, Mr. Tong Van Thai, Minh Le village, Minh Tien commune, said: In 2020, I was introduced to the jicama variety by a relative from Bac Giang . Realizing that my family's soil was loose and sandy, suitable for growing this plant, I brought the variety home to plant. After only 4 months of care, the plant was ready for harvest. In the last jicama crop alone, my family planted 1.2 hectares, with a yield of about 24 tons, worth over 100 million VND.
Realizing the effectiveness of growing jicama, many households in the commune have learned, invested and developed the model, typically the household of Mr. Trieu Van Quan, Minh Le village.
Minh Tien is the commune with the largest area of prawn growing in Huu Lung district. In 2024, the commune's radish output will reach about 250 tons, with a total value of over 1 billion VND. From growing radish, some households have had an income of 60 - 180 million VND/year. |
Mr. Quan said: Realizing the effectiveness of growing jicama from local households, in 2021, my family converted from 15 sao of ineffective rice land to growing jicama. This type of plant has the advantage of being easy to care for, less susceptible to pests and diseases, and a short harvest time. Jicama is planted from April to July of the solar calendar. After only 4 months of care, the plant has yielded tubers, with a yield of 2 tons/sao. With an area of 15 sao, each year, my family harvests 30 tons, with an average selling price of 6,000 VND/kg, my family earns nearly 200 million VND, a value 10 times higher than growing rice on the same area.
Not only the two households mentioned above, in the past 3 years, the model of growing jicama has been interested in expanding the area by people in Minh Tien commune. According to the commune's statistics, currently, there are 20 households growing jicama with a total area of over 4.5 hectares. Of which, there is the Minh Le Jicama Growing Cooperative with 14 members (total planting area of 4 hectares). During the production process, the cooperative has linked up with traders to consume the products. Accordingly, after people have finished harvesting, traders will come to the fields to buy. Households growing jicama are mainly concentrated in the villages: Minh Le, Dong Tam... Minh Tien is also the commune with the largest jicama growing area in Huu Lung district. In 2024, the commune's jicama output will reach about 250 tons, with a total value of over 1 billion VND. From growing jicama, some households have had an income of 60 - 180 million VND/year.
Mr. Hoang Van Quy, Vice Chairman of Minh Tien Commune People's Committee, said: In order to support people in developing the model, recently, the commune government has stepped up propaganda and encouraged people to convert ineffective farming land to growing jicama. Along with that, every year, the commune government proactively coordinates with relevant units to organize 2-3 integrated training courses on cultivation (including integrating techniques for planting and caring for jicama) for local people.
In the coming time, people will continue to expand the area of planting jicama, especially, the Minh Le jicama growing cooperative will expand the area from 4 hectares to 5 hectares. It can be seen that people in Minh Tien commune have converted the crop structure appropriately, the jicama growing model has brought practical economic efficiency, improved people's lives, contributing to opening up prospects for developing production linkages and product consumption in the commune.
