Emergency cut off of Phong Chau pontoon bridge due to rising and strong water flow of Red River

The Red River water level rose and flowed rapidly, so the operating unit had to cut the Phong Chau pontoon bridge to ensure safety for people and vehicles crossing the bridge.

On June 11, according to information from Phu Tho Provincial Police, due to the rainy weather, the water level rose, the Red River section through Phong Chau pontoon bridge connecting Lam Thao and Tam Nong districts was flowing rapidly. To ensure safety, Brigade 249, Engineering Corps (the unit operating the pontoon bridge) urgently cut the Phong Chau pontoon bridge.

The pontoon bridge closure will begin on the morning of June 11 until further notice. Phu Tho Provincial Police urges vehicles to pay attention to their travel routes.

This is not the first time the Phong Chau pontoon bridge has been forced to be cut off in an emergency. Previously, on the morning of May 25, due to rain, high water levels, and high flow rates, to ensure safety, the operating unit cut the pontoon bridge at 5am the same day.

Phong Chau pontoon bridge was installed by the Corps of Engineers on September 30, 2024, after the collapse of Phong Chau bridge span that caused 8 casualties.

The pontoon bridge was installed about 400m from the collapsed Phong Chau bridge, helping people in Tam Nong, Lam Thao districts and Viet Tri city travel more easily, without having to go around Ngoc Thap bridge, which is 40-50km further away.

Phong Chau pontoon bridge is installed and anchored to serve people's travel in conditions of flow velocity of 2.2 m/s or less. When the flow velocity exceeds the above number, the authorities will temporarily suspend the pontoon bridge operation to ensure safety.

The pontoon bridge is operated from 6am to 10pm daily. Non-motorized vehicles, motorbikes, scooters, and three-wheeled motorbikes are allowed to travel in both directions at a speed not exceeding 5km/hour.

For cars, only cars and pickup trucks are allowed to travel in one direction when crossing the bridge, each direction is 10 minutes, the distance between vehicles on the bridge is not less than 30m, speed is not more than 10km/h.
