UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has called on the international community to take immediate action to end the nearly year-long conflict in the Gaza Strip.
"Ending the war in Gaza and preventing the conflict from spreading in the region is an absolute and urgent priority," Turk emphasized, while also calling on Israel to abide by the decisions of the United Nations Security Council and the International Court of Justice.
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries also issued a joint statement demanding that Israel immediately cease military operations in the Gaza Strip, strongly condemning human rights violations there.
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar also called for a ceasefire as soon as possible.
However, according to Channel 12, there is “great pessimism” among Israeli negotiators. The US plan to present a new proposal in the next two or three days is now considered unfeasible.
Washington is unwilling to offer new proposals unless or until it sees signs of progress. The U.S. is urging other mediators, Qatar and Egypt, to find out what the “limits of Hamas” are.
Channel 12 also noted that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's statement on September 2nd regarding the continued maintenance of Israeli military control over the Philadelphi corridor along the Gaza-Egypt border—a position not explicitly stated in the May proposal—has "buried" the chances of reaching an agreement.
Prime Minister Netanyahu is currently facing criticism both domestically and internationally for failing to reach a ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement with the Palestinian Hamas group.
US President Joe Biden believes Netanyahu has "not done enough" to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Internal Israelis are also dissatisfied with the current government's hostage rescue efforts.
Nevertheless, the Israeli Prime Minister declared on September 8-9 that the country would make every effort to achieve the goals of its military operation in the Gaza Strip.
Speaking at a regular session of the Israeli government, Prime Minister Netanyahu emphasized that the task of Israeli officials is to continue the fight to eliminate Hamas; bring all hostages home, ensure that the Gaza Strip never again poses a threat to Israel, and bring people in the north and south back home safely.
