After Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh registered to donate organs and called on all citizens to voluntarily register to donate organs at the launching ceremony of the movement "Register to donate tissues and organs to save lives - Giving is forever" in May 2024, up to now, the number of organ donors as well as families who decided to donate their loved ones' organs when they "close their eyes and pass away" to medicine has increased significantly. In 2024, the whole country had 41 people donating organs after brain death. This is a record number in our country, because in the previous 3 years (2021-2023), only 36 people donated organs when they passed away.
With tissue and organ sources donated from living and brain-dead people, each year, our country's doctors and medical experts have performed more than 1,000 organ transplants, the highest in Southeast Asia. Not only that, many large hospitals have mastered very difficult organ transplant techniques, such as: heart transplant, lung transplant, limb transplant...
However, although Vietnam's organ transplant techniques have reached international standards, there is a serious shortage of organs to transplant to patients, because the number of people donating organs after brain death in our country is still among the lowest in the world . This situation leads to a serious shortage of donated organs, causing thousands of patients to still wish for organ transplants, and in reality, many people do not have the opportunity.
To solve the paradox of "supply not meeting demand" in the field of organ transplantation, the Ministry of Health and relevant ministries and branches continue to perfect the system of mechanisms and preferential policies to promote the activities of organ donation, retrieval and transplantation to develop more strongly and sustainably.
Communication work on organ and tissue donation after death also needs to be strengthened, especially on digital platforms, newspapers and social networks; as well as building a team of experts and psychological support staff, providing counseling services to families of organ donors, helping them understand and accept the decision to donate organs.
