The proportion of digital economy to GDP reached about 18.72%, continuing to be an important growth driver.

In the first 6 months of 2025, the digital economy continues to play a role as one of the important growth drivers of the Vietnamese economy. According to preliminary data, by the end of the first quarter, the proportion of the digital economy to GDP reached about 18.72%, a growth rate of about 10% compared to the same period in 2024.

On the afternoon of August 5, at the regular July press conference of the Ministry of Science and Technology, a representative of the Department of Digital Economy and Society said that in the first 6 months of 2025, the digital economy will continue to play a role as one of the important growth drivers of the Vietnamese economy, contributing to promoting labor productivity, innovating the growth model and enhancing the adaptability of businesses in the context of many fluctuations in the global economy and technology.

Representatives of the Department of Digital Economy and Digital Society mentioned some highlights in the contributions of the digital economy in recent times such as:

According to preliminary data, by the end of the first quarter, the proportion of digital economy to GDP reached about 18.72%, with a growth rate of about 10% compared to the same period in 2024. In which, the structure of the digital economy includes: core digital economy accounts for 8.63%; diffuse digital economy accounts for 10.09%.

The number of enterprises licensed to provide public digital signature certification services is 25 (10 enterprises providing remote digital signature services). As of the end of June, the total number of digital signature certificates issued was about 20 million. The proportion of the adult population with personal digital signatures or electronic signatures reached 35.48%.

According to statistics from Metric - a specialized e-commerce analysis company, in the first 6 months of the year, e-commerce sales reached 202.3 trillion, up 41.52% over the same period in 2024, of which sales in May and June increased by 44.54% and 46.49% respectively over the same period, while April recorded a steady increase of 32.03%.

E-commerce output reached 1,923.7 million products, up 25.44% over the same period in 2024. The number of online shops decreased by 6.25% over the same period in 2024, to 537.9 thousand shops, showing the elimination and concentration of large sellers.

Regarding the market share of the platforms: TikTok Shop increased its sales by 68.64% compared to the same period in 2024, accounting for 39% of the market share (up from 29%). Shopee increased its sales by 16.12%, but its market share decreased to 58% (from 63%). Lazada lost 48% of its sales compared to the same period in 2024, and its market share continued to shrink. Tiki lost 63% of its sales compared to the same period in 2024, and its market share continued to shrink.

In the third quarter, e-commerce sales are expected to reach VND122.8 trillion, up 21% over the second quarter. Output is expected to reach 1,236 million products, up 27% over the second quarter.

Regarding the digital technology industry, according to data from the Summary Report for the first 6 months of 2025 of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the accumulated revenue in the first 6 months of the year reached VND 2,289,627 billion, an increase of nearly 21% over the same period in 2024, reaching 54% of the 2025 plan. Profit reached VND 158,326 billion, an increase of nearly 20% over the same period in 2024, reaching 57% of the 2025 plan.

In the first 6 months of the year, the digital technology industry contributed VND 30,773 billion to the state budget, an increase of nearly 23% over the same period in 2024 and reaching 57% of the 2025 plan. Contribution to GDP reached VND 479,836 billion, an increase of 21% over 2024 and reaching nearly 53% of the 2025 plan. Hardware and electronics export turnover reached 81 billion USD, an increase of 27% over the same period in 2024 and reaching 51% of the 2025 plan.

As of the end of April, the total number of digital technology enterprises was 75,169.

However, according to the representative of the Department of Digital Economy and Digital Society, in addition to the achieved results, the digital economy still faces a number of challenges such as: digital gap between business groups and localities; shortage of high-quality digital human resources; fragmented data infrastructure. There is not yet a complete legal framework for new digital economic models such as artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, tokenization of digital assets, protection of personal data, etc.

In the coming time, the Ministry of Science and Technology will continue to coordinate with ministries, branches and localities to promote research, transfer and application of digital technology in key economic sectors.

Develop an ecosystem of innovation and digital startups, especially in core technologies such as AI, big data, cloud computing and blockchain.

Perfecting the institutional framework, standards and assessment platforms to serve digital economic development, while ensuring sustainable development and data security.

The Department of Digital Economy and Society assessed that the digital economy has been, is and will continue to be an important driving force to achieve the goal of rapid and sustainable development, enhance national competitiveness and deeply integrate with the global digital economy.

According to Resolution 57-NQ/TW, the Politburo sets a target that by 2030, Vietnam's digital economy will reach about 30% of GDP, and Vietnam will be among the top 50 countries in the world and the top 3 in ASEAN in terms of e-government and digital economy.
