According to Yonhap news agency, the South Korean Foreign Ministry said that the opening ceremony of the country's Embassy in Cuba took place on January 17 at the embassy headquarters in the Miramar district of the capital Havana.
According to the ministry, the opening of an embassy in Havana will strengthen bilateral cooperation and exchanges between the two countries, while facilitating consular services and citizen protection activities for Korean citizens residing in or visiting Cuba.
South Korea is expected to announce its ambassador to Cuba soon. According to reports, Seoul has nominated a career diplomat currently serving in the Central American country for the post after Havana approved the appointment.
Meanwhile, Cuba has appointed Claudio Monzon Baeza as its first ambassador to South Korea. Monzon officially took up his duties on January 8. However, Havana has not yet officially opened its embassy in South Korea.
In February 2024, Cuba and South Korea (a close ally of the United States) unexpectedly announced the re-establishment of diplomatic relations that had been interrupted since 1959. Since then, Seoul and Havana have worked to establish their own diplomatic missions in each other's countries.
There are currently about 30 Korean citizens living in Cuba.
