Hail may occur more often from now until May

Currently, the North is in the transitional season, so the weather is strongly disturbed. The intersection between hot and cold easily causes thunderstorms and hail. Most recently, on the afternoon of March 25, hail occurred in Dien Bien , Son La, causing a lot of damage.

According to the meteorological agency, hail and thunderstorms occur due to instability in the atmosphere, the conflict between hot and cold air masses. In the North and North Central regions, there is often hail when there is a hot low pressure area in the West and cold air masses at the beginning or end of the season.

Cold air flows down, meets the existing high temperature, will push the hot and humid air mass near the ground to rise up, forming strong thunderstorm clouds, developing vertically and having the shape of an anvil. In addition, the westerly wind trough at an altitude of 5,000 m is also a formation that easily creates hail.

When the temperature in the upper layers is cold enough, the ice crystals formed in the cloud will fall and continue to collide and stick together to create hailstones of different sizes. Therefore, the stronger and longer the convection, the more likely it is that hail will occur over a large area and with greater intensity.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Thanh, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that from now until May, dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are likely to appear more frequently than the average of many years and will mainly be concentrated in mountainous and coastal areas.

According to experts, hail is a dangerous weather phenomenon that usually occurs quickly within 10 to 20 minutes, so it can only be warned but not predicted to prevent damage. People need to pay attention to weather reports to have timely and effective preventive measures.

How to prevent hail damage

First, people need to recognize the signs of an impending hailstorm such as thunderstorms, dark clouds, and continuous rumbling sounds; followed by the appearance of showers and feeling the air temperature rapidly cooling, there is a high possibility of hail.

If you are on the road and encounter hail, you should quickly find shelter. If you cannot take shelter in time, you should find hard objects such as helmets or school bags to cover your head. After the hail has passed, wait for the ice on the road to melt before continuing to avoid slipping.

When staying in a house with a thatched roof, tiled roof, or fibro-cement roof, you should take shelter under a table, chair, bed, or find something hard to cover your head. To prevent damage caused by hail to crops and plants, people can set up nets and trellises along the beds. It is recommended to make the roof triangular in shape to help reduce the impact of hail when it hits.
