An amateur gold miner in Australia recently discovered a rock containing 4.6kg of gold and 2.6kg of precious heavy metals. The specimen was named “Lucky Strike Nugget” and was brought to the Lucky Strike Gold store. Store owner Darren Kamp said that in his 43 years of gold prospecting, he had never seen a rock containing such a large amount of gold.
The miner who found the rock initially valued it at half that and asked if he could sell the gold for $10,000 AUD ($6,675 USD). Kamp said the rock was so dirty when it was excavated that the gold was not visible from the outside. After cleaning, “gold was oozing out of the rock everywhere,” he said.
To make this precious discovery, the craftsman used a detector that costs only 1,200 AUD (800 USD). Kamp's shop is now seeing more customers buying detectors, possibly because people are earning extra income, the gold shop owner added.
