The US Department of Justice announced that a Chinese man was arrested in California on December 3 for allegedly exporting guns and ammunition to North Korea.

The Chinese man, Shenghua Wen (41 years old), was accused of violating US sanctions against North Korea, according to AFP.

Mr. Wen and unidentified accomplices are accused of hiding weapons and ammunition inside containers shipped from Long Beach, California, via Hong Kong, China, to North Korea.

The Justice Department said law enforcement seized two devices in August from Wen’s home that he planned to take to North Korea: a chemical threat identification device and a handheld receiver that detects listening devices.

Earlier in September, US law enforcement seized 50,000 9mm bullets that Mr. Wen allegedly obtained to send to North Korea, according to the US Justice Department.

According to the US Department of Justice, Mr. Wen tried to obtain a civil aircraft engine from a broker in the US.

Wen entered the United States legally on a student visa in 2012 but remained in the country after his student visa expired, according to the US Department of Justice.

The US Justice Department said that because he was in the US illegally, Wen was prohibited from possessing guns and ammunition. Wen also did not have the necessary licenses to export ammunition, guns and other equipment to North Korea, according to UPI news agency, citing US officials.

Mr. Wen is facing up to 20 years in prison for conspiring to violate US sanctions, according to AFP.

There is currently no information about the reaction of China or North Korea to Mr. Wen's arrest.
