According to Master, Doctor Manh Cuong, Deputy Director of Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital, a grade II general hospital under the Hanoi Department of Health , Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital has outstanding strengths in two leading specialties: Dentistry and ENT.

Nearly 60 children received free cleft lip and palate examination and surgery
Notably, over the 35 years of establishment and development, the hospital has accompanied Operation Smile, persistently bringing smiles and new hope to thousands of patients with cleft lip and palate deformities.

Cleft lip and palate is one of the most common congenital malformations, affecting not only the function of eating and speaking but also the aesthetics, psychology and ability to integrate into society of the patient. To achieve optimal treatment, a comprehensive, multidisciplinary and continuous approach is needed from the time of detection of the malformation until adulthood.
The treatment process includes prenatal counseling, early intervention immediately after birth, plastic surgery, orthodontics, speech rehabilitation and psychological support, contributing to bringing a normal life and bright future to the patient.
Sharing information at the workshop, Dr. Jui-Pin Lai, Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Kaohsiung, Taiwan (China) said: Although cleft lip and palate (CLP) is not a disease or acquired medical condition, the consequences of this deformity are lifelong, may not be curable, and affect the patient's function, confidence and quality of life.

However, the effects of the disease will improve when the patient is cared for with a comprehensive treatment plan. The main goals of initial surgery are to restore normal function, develop speech and facial aesthetics. This helps the patient to integrate into society with a stable mental state.
In particular, early and accurate diagnosis of the pathological condition of cleft lip and palate in patients is very important for a proper comprehensive treatment plan.
Primary care physicians (PCPs) and cleft palate surgeons must be aware of the potential problems that can arise with cleft palate, understand the steps of a comprehensive treatment protocol, refer to appropriate treatment specialists, and monitor the patient on an ongoing basis.

At the workshop, experts and scientists in the field of maxillofacial and otolaryngology discussed, shared and updated the latest knowledge in the field of cleft lip and palate treatment such as: Alveolar bone grafting for cases of large alveolar bone clefts; techniques for creating a nasal-mucosa-gingival-periosteal base; lip plastic surgery in patients with cleft lip and palate; alveolar bone grafting...
At the same time, this is also an opportunity to strengthen cooperation, connection, and build a foundation for sustainable and effective cooperative relationships between parties in the field of dentistry, otolaryngology in the coming time.
